Is egg collection as painful as I’m reading online?

I will be booked in next week and getting myself all worked up about it.

Also I’ve done 7 days of menopur and feeling bloated and uncomfortable. Will this discomfort increase over the next 5 days or more until I have my date for egg collection?

Thanks for your help all

Hope everyone is ok xxx

Thank you!! Hope all goes well on Friday and they give you a date!! I should of been in on Monday but they’ve brought it forward!!

I’m quite bloated and uncomfortable too now, but with the size of some of the follicles I’m not surprised 🙈 xxx

Thanks you!

Just out of curiosity how long have you been taking your meds for to have such large follicles? Xx

Hi Babyblues, my egg collection was painless as such I was sedated and have no memory of the procedure post them giving me the sedation (it was actually quite a nice drunk feeling) then I just remember waking up in recovery. Apparently I spoke to my husband as I saw him going to do his part but i don't remember. Post procedure paracetamol and a hot water bottle was enough. I was very bloated pre and post procedure but the worst for me was the sore breasts which took at least a week to settle down. Try not to worry too much and if you can enjoy the proceess of the baby making journey. xx

Thank you for your reply.

Yes I’m trying to enjoy this baby making journey.

I just feel so bloated and uncomfortable I was worried something was wrong today especially with having the whole weekend to go before egg collection.

Excited for Fridays scan to make sure everything is fine xx

Yes that was my concern. The nurse went over some care questions today though and she is happy to see me Friday as planned x

Oh, that was really helpful, thanks. I'm about to start my IVF journey too so a little dreaded as a newbie would be. Your reply is a relief though and yeah the feeling of on a journey to being a mother is definitely going to cover up for all the pains on the way. I just have one question if you don't mind. Will I have to take rest for the rest of the day or it's fine to keep a light work schedule for the later part of the day? I mean it's okay I can take a leave if it's really needed but otherwise knowing I might need to take many later on and even on the urgent basis I was just trying to be a little calculative. Also, do you have any idea that does prescribing Fostimon instead of the common alternative Menopur means my case is a bit more complicated?

here-_to_get_support profile image
here-_to_get_support in reply to AmbK

Hey, to be honest I took 3 days off to relax and recover, but i guess that was because i could. I would have struggled to not take the next day off. I was advised I was unable to drive for 2 days due to the sedation. I took Fostimon.... I don't think it was anything to do with anything been more complicated just the choice of drug used by my clinic. This is my first cycle but please if you ever have any questions message me xx

I took a mix of Fostimon and Menopur if I remember rightly. One in the morning and the other at night. Everyone's protocol is different and I think a lot of it depends on what the Dr is in the habit of prescribing as well as on your situation.

I also thought I would be able to work from home after the egg collection but realistically there's no way, the sedation leaves you groggy and tired even if you're not sore or crampy. If possible I would take the next day off too as you still won't be 100%. I even said to my clinic I didn't think I needed a Dr's note for the next day but they said they'd give me one just in case - thank goodness!!

Don't get scared by the horror stories you read but, on the other hand, be aware that your body has been through a lot and take the time to look after yourself and let it recover. You want to be feeling as well as possible before your transfer after all :)

Best of luck with it all xxx

Thank you for sharing your experience! :) And more for the last few lines on as a note to stay well and at optimum health. I'll take a doc note and rest from the day and the next then. You're right, at any cost I don't want to take chances and jeopardise the success of the whole process by wrecking my body or pushing it to the extreme.

I will be honest and say that I found EC very painful. I was sedated but fully awake and aware unfortunately, even after an extra dose of sedation. Although it was painful, it only lasted 10 minutes and I had 16 eggs retrieved so I feel like it was worth it. I really hope yours is a nice pain free procedure, just wanted to share a not-so-good scenario with you so you have every angle covered x

I see you had some amazing news earlier! Congratulations 😀 xx

I did, so it was all worth it (providing this bean sticks around). Don’t mean to scare you, but I wish someone had warned me that it might be unpleasant x

MrsAdzee profile image
MrsAdzee in reply to Kitcat12

Sorry but I have to agree, very similar experience to Kitcat, the sedative did not seem to work so I was very aware of what was happening. However, it wasn’t painful enough for me to ask the dr to stop and I would go through it again - it’s all for the greater good. Sorry I couldn’t reassure you otherwise and hopefully you’ll have a different experience. Maybe I’m just a wimp 😬xx

Remember that you're probably only getting the horror stories online!! I think it varies from person to person but I definitely recommend you take the next day off work if possible. The sedation will leave you less than 100% even if you're not sore. Nothing to get worked up about though. Just make sure your schedule's cleared and you've got some good stuff lined up on Netflix!!

(Oh, and stick to light foods after the sedation - pepperoni pizza is NOT a good idea. Learned that the hard way hahaha)

Babyblues1 profile image
Babyblues1 in reply to MissSaoPaulo

Yes I will be taking the next day off work.

I have Netflix and prime at the ready lol

Thank you for the advice on food, better cancel the curry then 😂

OH will be looking after me so no doubt it will be something simple 😊 x

Well, that makes us pretty much on the same boat... though there's a variation in time. Am scheduled up for my first IVF too. We're supposed to go for it sometime in June - July but had to postpone the plans for some bummer money shortage. I'll be starting on my Fostimon around 3-5th Jan as per the schedule so far. I'm not sure why they choose differently (in my case) heard most women have had Menopur or how they really decide on the drugs.... nonetheless, the egg collection is painful indeed as far as I've figured from posts and blogs. However, they use sedatives or so I've heard so hoping it will be bearable in spite of all the heads up from ladies about a detailed account of pain. Also, there will be some bleeding or so the directives say. It should be okay in a few hours post collection but one should consume more fluid, like increase juice, soup as well as water over the next couple of days. Well, it's all from copious amount of online digging, since I'm too a first timer... but thought it'll help. Good Luck

Hi thanks for your reply.

Sorry to hear about your postpone!

That’s what I find myself doing online research.

Blogs are funny and informative but at same time they worry me when I read the ones where troubles have occurred.

Not long to go for me and I will be updating with my experience.

Hopefully with minimal pain. Good luck xxx

AmbK in reply to Babyblues1

Well, I guess everyone on a TTC does a good amount of online research and women like us who've had to spend more time on trying naturally and in every other way over a comparatively much longer time owing to the failures dwell even more on the online blogs and forums. The forums helps a lot... to advise to support and even for the rant on the failures but the mixed reviews are sometimes confusing. Like whether it gonna be painful or not the egg collection lol.

The problem is you only get to read the horror stories because nobody bothers to write about it if everything goes well hahaha. It'll be fine but plan to take it very easy for a few days after - your body needs to recover and get ready for the transfer so give it a break ;)

Best of luck!!

hahhaa I guess you have a point and quite a reasonable one. Why would people bother to write about when everything goes just fine... well unless they are asked about it of course. Like a prod. review eh. mostly you find the faults mentioned from genuine buyers. Thanks again... will surely be able to shrug of a dread now.

I’m the biggest wimp going- so much so that I cried in the hospital room before egg collection! But I can honestly say it was no worse than a smear test! I promise! You will be fine. Ps I’m sat here feeding my little boy while I write this .... I wish you all the luck in the world too xxx

Hi.

I was on Menopur for 10 days.

I had egg collection on Monday, it was absolutely fine, I was sore and bloated before and my boobs hurt. The pain killer they put up your bum works an absolute treat. However, I would take as much time off as you can, I have woken up today and am still sore. It’s difficult to determine how you are going to be because everyone is different. There is nothing to worry about with egg collection itself, it’s all over and done with in half an hour and you don’t have a clue anything is happening but the next day (for me) was awful. It was just painful, like bad period pains. Today, I still have period type pains and the more I move the worse they get. I don’t want to scare you because if you’re resting it eases but moving around is very uncomfortable.

Good luck, I hope all goes well. X

I was sedated too. It was absolutely fine, even afterwards. My partner was with me when I woke up and the nurses made us tea and biscuits :-))

I was high risk for OHSS and felt pretty bloated for a week or so afterwards, but it does go away.

Hi there. For my NHS hospital egg collections I was conscious and could feel some pain but whatever drugs they gave me made me feel so spaced out I didn’t care what they were doing to me! For private cycles I had deep sedation which was amazing as I was knocked out and didn’t see or feel a thing until after it was all over. Do you know which of the two you’ll be having? xx
