Wondering about cause of bleeding...

My history... 1 natural miscarriage, 1st IVF ended in 5 week miscarriage, currently 5.5 weeks after second IVF.

Thursday I started bleeding. Although it was just spotting I broke down at work and they drove me straight to A&E. Bleeding got a lot heavier and was fresh, red and lumpy. I also had really bad back pain so assumed the worst.

However, they did a scan and (due to my ‘wonky’ uterus couldn’t see very clearly) saw a sac measuring exactly the right size and a yolk sac. So I’m trying to stay positive.

The bleeding carried on that afternoon and then stopped overnight with a tiny bit of brown spotting after each of my five (!!) daily progesterone suppositories. Based on this, my clinic said they weren’t even concerned enough for me to come in for beta tests.

As I said, I am trying to stay positive, but what the hospital or my clinic wouldn’t tell me is what the bleeding could have been. So I was wondering if anyone had been through something similar that wasn’t a miscarriage and if so what on earth caused the bleeding? I know speculating isn’t super helpful, but was looking for some insight...

I haven’t experienced anything like this but I do see lots of women who have bleeds on here, some really big bleeds, but still the babies are fine. It must be such a worrying time for you. I hope that one of the ladies who’ve experienced something similar will soon put your mind at rest a little xx

When my partner had a similar experience at a similar gestation, we asked the sonographer at the EPU what could have caused it, & she said they don’t always know. & when we went for our 1st scan at our IVF clinic & told the nurse about the bleed & visiting the EPU, she also said that many women bleed during pregnancy with no obvious cause, but with medicated IVF pregnancies it could be due to irritation of the cervix from the pessaries. This could very easily be the cause in your case as you are having to insert them 5x a day!!! (Poor you!) Which pessaries are you taking? If they are cyclogest then they can be inserted rectally, which many of the women on here find much better as it is less messy. It might be worth you trying it if you’re on cyclogest, to see if the spotting settles. (Apparently, after the first time the thought of it’s not so bad.)

Good luck with it all. This whole process is such an emotional rollercoaster! xx

Thanks for this.

I am using two cyclogest a day, but the others appear to have to be vaginal and due to some digestive issues I have rectally is not really an option. I can kind of cope with the brown spotting though! Thanks for your reply, I must try to stop worrying!

That’s fair enough then. & it’s only natural to worry, but the further along you get, the easier it gets to relax (in our experience anyway!!) xx

I’ve never experienced large bleeding but did have some light pink spotting for the first few weeks of my pregnancy. When I had my viability scan I asked and they said they could see a bit of a blood clot (measuring about 1cm) on the outside of everything, which they think was a bit of the placenta broken away. I haven’t had any bleeding since about 7 weeks but I have read stories of ladies on here who have bled much later and gone on to be fine. I hope this is your time and the bleeding turns out to be one of those unexplained things.
