Egg Collection experiences.

Hiya,

I will stop blabbing on soon I promise, it's just all coming down to the crunch now and I'm finding myself worried about egg collection. I will have taken paracetomol and will have conscious sedation (I think!). Has anyone else had these and can tell me a bit about their experience? I only have follicles on my left ovary as my right one is just ovarian tissue, so I guess they won't even explore my right side. Thanks in advance guys xxx

I had this yes. I had to use a rectal painkiller in the morning too. I freaked out as I’d never inserted anything there before 😂 I was awake throughout the whole procedure. Awake and aware. I had a drip in my arm which fed through pethadine. I was told that at any time I could ask for more pain relief. Which I did. Although it wasn’t nice at all it wasn’t as bad as I’d feared (I promise) and trust me, I was terrified. Having said that, my clinic have done away with conscious sedation now and tell me that next time I won’t feel or remember a thing! Good luck. You’ll be ok xx

Hi KirstyC90. Just hope that all goes well for you and you get satisfactory sedation prior to collection. Mae sure you drink plenty of water afterwards o keep your urine output nice and pale. Good luck! Diane

Hi. Is me again!!!

I had my egg collection on monday, my clinic had given me a 600mg brufen tablet to take roughly an hour before the procedure, i was sedated/awake but can’t remember a thing and didn’t feel a thing, and for me it only took half an hour! Its nothing to worry about!

Ah thank you that is reassuring! I had surgery in January where I was knocked out but they gave me something before that that seemed to make me really drowsy, I'm wondering if that was sedation?! I hope so as I think I'll be ok! Does it make you dizzy drowsy or relaxed drowsy? Xx

Haha! Hopefully it'll be that way for me! I was thinking maybe I'd put my headphones in but I don't suppose I can if I need to talk to the doctor doing it xx

My partner actually said to me when we got home it was a shame i couldn’t have put headphones in and listened to music, my reply was i wouldn’t have heard it anyway because i was out of it!

The good thing about it is, you come round from it really quickly, without feeling ill like you can do with GA. I was sat having a cuppa and something to eat after 5 minutes! Xx

I didn't find egg collection bad at all - but this is my experience and everyone is different.

I joked with the team to knock me out - and I think I had sedation but fell fast asleep and woke up with a lovely cup of tea and a sandwich beside me all done!

I think compared to some ladies I probably had very gentle stimulation so 9 eggs only collected.

I rested for the rest of the day and took it pretty easy until embryo transfer.

Best of luck!

Thank you, perhaps I'm building it up in my head to be scary and painful. I think with sedation I'll be ok. Just the sound of it I'm like argh! But I've dealt with awful period pain and ectopic pregnancy pain and surgery afterwards so hopefully I'll be ok! Xx

The thought of it is awful - when you imagine it. If I had to get it done again this would be the part of the journey that least bothered me.

I think the feeling of being bloated from the meds as the follicles develop is the worst bit...

Best of luck hon - honestly just get the sedation and have a nice snooze! ;)

Haha thank you! That has put my mind at rest a bit thanks so much! I think I just need to chill! I am super excited at the thought of maybe becoming a mummy! It is also a very interesting process with follicles ect xxx

It is so so fascinating - and I felt so blessed to have gone through this amazing treatment, even the embryo transfer is so insane to actually watch them place it inside you!

There are a lot of struggles in the whole journey - but it truly is incredible too in many ways.

My 1 cycle of IVF didn't work but the treatment kick started my system and we conceived straight after (still early days though). But I am so happy we have an embryo in the freezer should we need it at a later date.

Fingers crossed for you!

I had awake sedation with fentanyl (pain killer) and midazolam (sedation) once they gave it to me I felt woozy and closed my eyes, I could still hear the doctor and respond but I only remember about 5 minutes of the 30 minutes I was in. It was mildly uncomfortable of the bits I remember. Pretty much remember going in and laughing with the medical team about my cats before the fentanyl and the getting my in position, having the transvaginal probe inserted and then them asking me to move back onto my bed afterwards and having my BP done when I was in recovery. The sleep was amazing. One of the most relaxing and easy parts of the whole process. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.xx
