Stopping estrogen and progesterone

I am 11 weeks pregnant today and am on estrogen patches and progesterone pessaries. The clinic Has said I can stop all tomorrow or on Thursday after my 12 week scan. It worries me stopping cold turkey. Also worried if im better to stop them or to continue until Thursday. They said no need to stay on them now and it will only be for my piece of mind and that’s it’s my decision. So basically I’m just worried about everyone lol ..... this whole ivf journey is just one worry after the next!! Any support or advice would be much appreciated x

I was only on progesterone but I stopped cold turkey at 12 weeks, which was nearly a week before my scan. Scan all fine and I'm now 14 weeks. Trust the consultant, they really wouldn't advise stopping if there was any risk at all that you still needed it - their objective is the same as yours. So it really is just a scary psychological hurdle to get over, but no harm done if you decide to just lower it gradually instead, and probably better for your overall health if doing that will make you feel less anxious. Best of luck for your scan xx

Hi

It definitely is one worry after another 🙈

I was told to stop when I was 14 weeks...(everyone’s different) but I did carry on for a few more days I felt like the medication was my baby’s life line

do what you feel is right

Good luck and congratulations too xx

You could always ask for a progesterone blood test just to put your mind at ease? Xx

My clinic told me it’s actually safe to stop 8 weeks after transfer and they only keep us on them until ten weeks after transfer as an extra precaution. I stopped cold turkey at 11 weeks five days as instructed but I threw up my oestrogen tablet a couple of days before, rang the emergency line and they said it wasn’t a problem at the stage I was at. The placenta will have taken over.

Both times Ive completely come off after 12 weeks but this time it went on for a few extra days (one a day only til 12.5) but not necessary and my nose bleeds stopped and migraines eased off as I didn’t need the extra support. The placenta has fully taken over by then so they’re not needed xxx

In IVF the hormones are usually prescribed as a precaution as most women do not need them, ie that has not been the reason they can't get pregnant. I had a progesterone problem and needed the progesterone to get pregnant and keep baby alive so was really worried about coming off it. Diane on here advised me to taper down. If on multiple tablets a day, cut down to one. Then every other day. Then once a week. I tapered down over two weeks and then had a scan at 15 weeks to make sure baby was ok.

Your 12 week scan will tell you whether your placenta is looking healthy (ask if they don't tell you). If it is, you should have no problem coming off the drugs. It's a scary time, but as previous posters have said, everything will most likely be absolutely fine. You just have to do what you are most comfortable with.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and enjoy the rest of it x
