Will I have consultant led care?

I finally went for my viability scan yesterday & was amazed to be told I have a healthy baby so far. I was shocked & cried, cried & cried. I'm still not taking the pregnancy for granted after my previous miscarriages but wondered if anyone knows if due to my age ( I'm 41 ) if my pregnancy care will be consultant led? I can't even get an appointment with my GP for over 2 weeks to ask him.

Hi summerrainbow. Lovely to hear all is well. I think you will find that you will be looked after by a midwife for starters. You will see a consultant as your pregnancy progresses, and a decision will then be made about care if any worries arise. Happy pregnancy. Diane

Hi Hidden as far as I'm aware the midwife is the person most likely to determine if you'll need consultant led care. I'm not sure your gp will be able to tell you. Have you booked in your midwife appointment? I never needed to see my gp for anything so far in my pregnancy. They determine if you need a consultant based on risk level - eg. Medical condition, underweight /overweight etc. I am considered low risk but I am still consultant led because I'm having twins. I'd get your midwife appt booked ASAP as these can be even more difficult to get than a gp appt. Congratulations on your pregnancy xxx

Thanks for that. I managed to get a cancellation & saw a GP yesterday. My surgery just give you a form & tell you to self refer to my chosen hospital. I don't really understand it though as there was a midwife doing appointments at the surgery yesterday & all the GP said was do what it says in the pregnancy pack! Will have to call the surgery & ask again I think. Congratulations on your twins 🙂 xx

Hiya.

When i had my midwife appointment in early December they said i would be consultant led because of IVF baby and my age im 35 they classed me as a geriatric mother (how rude lol) Sadly i never made it the next appointment as i miscarried.

They also said i would have needed additional scans.

Xx

Lol, I hate the term geriatric mother but did smile when I when I was told I was one 😂. I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriage, I know how awful they are. Wishing you all the best for the future xc

Congratulations! My care has been consultant led throughout, purely due to the IVF. I’m 34 and have no other risk factors or complications so I guess maybe that’s just the policy in the area I’m in. I also have a community midwife who I’ve had a lot more contact with than the consultant. Wishing you all the best for the rest of your pregnancy xx

Thank you for that. I went & got a pregnancy pack from my GP yesterday & need to self refer myself to my chosen hospital online apparently so should find out soon. Good luck with your pregnancy xx

I was consultant led through my pregnancy, which included more appointment checks and scans so not a bad thing 😀

Thanks for your reply Hun. I'm such a worrier so consultant led care would probably give me a bit more reassurance. Xx

Have you got a booking appointment with your midwife? I spoke to my midwife on the phone and she is referring me to the obstetrician at the hospital to be seen before 12 weeks, but this is more due to my miscarriage history rather than my age (39).

Mine was due to the fact that I was carrying an IVF baby. I still saw my midwife as much as with a normal pregnancy but had a couple of extra scans and visits to the consultant.
