Taking aspirin without a clotting factor diagnosis?

Hi everyone,

With all the recent bad news on the forum I have increasingly been wondering if I should have had more blood tests to rule out clotting issues and APS etc

I was going to push consultant to do it on nhs but it was a mess and didn’t get done.

Now I’m undergoing FET next week! I know some clinics with recurrent miscarriages have just recommended steroids or aspirin to counter any clotting or infection issues but was wondering if there was a great risk to taking the aspirin if not needed?

Considering the pessaries etc have blood clot risks anyway wouldn’t low dose aspirin be a good choice ?

I’m hesitant to ask the clinic just yet- was just wondering what others experience was?

Thanks in advance

(I’ve never been pregnant but fresh ivf cycle resulted in heavy bleeding 5dp5dt

Hi Saya, I don't have any 'medical answers'. I've just had my endometrial scratch, awaiting my next period so I can start meds and 'really hoping I get a good enough lining this time' I will go ahead with a FET at the end of May. Saying all this, after having my last transfer halted - following TFT results - high antibodies etc. I have been asked to go on steriods and blood thinners this time... leading up to the transfer. Whether they will continue after I don't know. I did enquire about taking 'baby aspirin' but was told the 'blood thinner - which I think comes in the form of an injection? for me' should be enough. I took baby aspirin in prep last time before my transfer - after being told it wouldn't make a difference, but my previous clinic advised each transfer so I thought I'd go with them. Personally, if I wasn't prescribed these blood thinners I would have gone with daily baby aspirin (which you can buy at the chemist - they are a lower dose). Wishing you all the very best. I'm kind of feeling 'negative' about it all at the mo. I've 'built myself up' so many times before and crashed with either nothing or bfp followed by a heavy bleed and mc. Just take things day by day and don't stop asking your clinic etc questions. Keep them on their toes and write everything down. Wishing you all the best. xx

Hi music1!

Ahh so good to hear ur going ahead with FET again! Best of luck.

Try not to be disheartened- it seems like they’re crossing all the T’s and dotting I’s With u now! Which is brilliant. You normally have to push them to do anything

A lot of clinics suggest aspirin blood thinners and steroids just as precautions.

I was hesitant to go down steroid route but I’m going to check my antibody levels again and see what they come up with now my vitamins are more in range and I feel better.

If you have issues with your lining ask them to check your hormone levels and maybe progesterone injections rather than pessaries.

What meds are u on? I’m taking oestrogen patches rather than tabs this time and cyclogest instead of utrogestan.. I feel like this is doing a better job already.

Hope all works out for both of us ☺️🙏🙏🙏

Hi Saya, thanks for you reply. I did ask about Lubion (progesterone injections) which I had started last time (prior to my FET being cancelled at the last minute). They were painful to take and I was also on Cyclogest at the same time. My new consultant dismissed the Lubion altogether and said Cyclogest should be enough. I'll be on patches - 3... if I can find enough body fat round my stomach and thighs :) Haven't started any meds yet, but I will need to take my prescription to the local pharmacy as I've a feeling they won't have all this ivf stuff out back. My previous clinic used to have everything available. I haven't ever tried oestrogen tabs, I was on daily injections last time - Merional I think? I hope things work for both of us. Maybe you could pm me and we could stay in touch this cycle? I used to talk a lot with Button last year, as we were due to have our transfer on the same day. Only now she's had a beautiful baby we've lost touch and ... I still feel pretty crap about having nothing lol. Wishing you all the best xx

Hi Saya I am on low dose aspirin which my midwife prescribed for me but I didn't start taking until I was 12 weeks pregnant. She told me it was because of my previous miscarriage. I wonder whether you can discuss your concerns with your gp? I don't think the clinic will have any insight into whether you should take aspirin. Mine weren't particularly keen to give me anything other than progesterone

Hi lilli!

Lol@Gp

He would be more clueless than me. But that’s interesting ur midwife prescribed it. My ivf consultant is also the local gynaecologist so maybe il give the clinic a try and see what she says.

Hi there,

I have no medical advice either but when at my appointment in Spain recently she said that she would prescribe aspirin and clexane from embryo transfer. I have no identified blood clotting etc. Issues. So maybe it’s just a routine thing at my clinic which suggests it wouldn’t cause you any issues?? best to find out for sure though I guess.

Hi Debbie - thanks for your reply.

Yes that’s the impression I’m getting that it’s not going to do any harm.

I think I’ll check with clinic then x

hi, i took low dose aspirin (self medicated) for my FET and got a BFP (he's now 1!!) i did tell my clinic i was taking it and they advised me to continue till week 13 once the placenta takes over. No idea if it actually helped but it didn't do any harm. Xx

Congratulations !!

That gives me some hope and I’m Kicking myself for not having these blood issues tested earlier. Got so fed up with consultants and forgot by the time we’d agreed to do the FET!

That’s so odd though- some women are being advised to take up to 12/13 weeks. Others are being told to take after 13 weeks!

I think il ask clinic and see what their thoughts are

Thanks again

i think it varies depending on either implantation issues or miscarriage issues... I took it because i believed i had implantation issues (short luteal phase, very light periods and spotting a week prior to period) i was classed as 'unexplained infertility'. Hope your FET works out. Xx

Hi Saya, good luck with the transfer!! I have many friends who have taken 75mg baby aspirin from the day after their fet as precautionary measures and I myself have taken it too. After seeing a haematologist for my Factor v Leiden she said Clexane 40 is what I needed but this depends on your blood results. Some patients need both or just the one. Aspirin can do no harm and after my first miscarriage before ivf 3 years ago a Consultant Obstetrician told me to take 75mg aspirin the minute I find out i’m Pregnant so there must be something in it! Xxx

Hi! Thanks for your reply.

I haven’t had any blood tests for any of these conditions nor have I ever miscarriaged because I never have been pregnant. But I’ve had various unusual bleeding and clotting and other issues with my periods that I’ve suspected I May have a slight issue.

I also have autoimmune hypothyroidism so the chance of other conditions is also high. I guess If aspirin has no harm it might be worth taking.

I’ve emailed my clinic now so will see what they say- although I suspect they will cover themselves and say not to.

Be interesting to see what they say if they know you are autoimmune and hypothyroid. I will look at my prescription and see what they have prescribed me this time. I think they are trying to 'dot the i, and cross the t' after the last mess up a year ago. x

You’re welcome! Lol

Yes I’m trying to rule things out and slowly introduce things but time is running out!

So much stress caused by all this self research and difficulty without testing.

If only doctors knew everything eh! Good luck to you too x
