Hi everyone, we just recently had our first failed cycle and one of the things the clinic has recommended is a DNA fragmentation test on my OH’s sperm. They send the sample to Denmark (?!) and it comes back with a result of low, medium or high fragmentation/damage. They then recommend he start taking Fertilix supplements dependent on the result. They come in three different strengths for different levels of damage.
We’re currently NHS funded but we would have to pay for this. £160 for the test and then up to £80 a month for the supplements. We are a bit concerned this is just a money spinner and there seems to be no info online. Does anyone else have any knowledge or experience of this? Thanks in advance!

Hi BrightonBelle85. Unfortunately some tests are only performed abroad. I don't think it is unreasonable to try a sperm fragmentation test, if you have a failed cycle. Treatment of infection, if present, with antibiotics would also be expected to reduce DNA fragmentation, if found. There is some evidence to show that repair of varicose veins (if present) in the scrotum (varicocele) repair may improve sperm DNA as they generate excess heat. I have also heard that sperm aspirated from the testicles tend to have a healthier DNA than ejaculated sperm. Studies show that ICSI/TESA may be a more effective treatment than IVF for sperm with a high DNA fragmentation. It is always an idea to have a second test performed two months after the first to check for consistency. That’s about all I know about this subject, so hope it helps a little, and I wish you both well with the outcome. Up to you with the vitamins etc., but he needs to keep "everything Cool" to give the best environment for sperm to grow. Hope all is sorted. Diane
