I was fineally referred by my GP back in sept for fertility treatment. after three months I attended my appointment and saw the registrar. I was advised to loose weight and have a AMH test and ultrasound. They then saw me again three months later.
I attended my appointment on Monday and I could sense a sad tone to the room as soon as I walked in.
Basically, My AMH is very, very low. My mum went through menopause very early and I think I am heading the same way. These are my results:
Dec 17 2.1 pmls
Jan 18 0.5 pmls
Feb 18 3.8 pmls
I did ask why the last one was higher and was advised it just goes up and down sometimes. I have been advised to go onto IVF asap but I have to privately fund it as they dont treat someone with an amh under 5. All the other tests where normal (I do have an underactive thyriod).
I have been told that I have a 10 percent chance with IVF a normal 37 year old would have a 35 per cent chance.
I feel like my world has been torn apart. To make matters worse, a colleague has announced her pregancy last week. I am very pleased for her as her road has been a very differcult one but she is showing now and its really upsetting me.
I just need some some sucess stories to keep my chin up, I really feel like giving up, the consultant warned me the IVF is very hard. He was very lovely and almost look sad he couldnt help further.

Hey, a low amh doesn’t mean low egg quality. You can still get pregnant with a low amh, it only takes one good egg. There are women who get pregnant with 0.4! I read up on this when I was going through amh tests and I got my result - I had no idea what amh meant. Carry on doing what your doing - keep going and have faith. If it doesn’t work out there are always other routes if you are willing to consider them, donor eggs or whatever, don’t be hard on yourself these things are out of our control. Xx
Thank you. We have decided on a Clinic and are getting the tests kick started. I just really wanted to have our 'own child'. My hubby has better than average sperm I even went on to say to him that I would understand if he wanted to leave me to have his own family. Doctor seemed to treat my very low Amh as a death sentence.
Remember your husband loves you and it’s you he wants babies with, a donor baby carries some of the birth mothers dna/genes - I’m not sure if your drs have made you aware of this? I was shocked when they said, it’s not a bad thing it just means that the child is biologically connected to three people. I considered donating my eggs a few months ago, I’ve not done it yet. I didn’t go ahead because of the emotional connection I have with my eggs - I need to let go. It’s not a death sentence, you do what’s right for you. Lots of ladies on here are going through the same and could give you fantastic advice on this, in new to this kind of thing. In the process of finding out what I want tbh xx
You’re not alone, I’m similar to you and I know the feeling so well of total shock, fear, anxiety.
My amh was 2.2 when I was 32 and since then it’s measured as 4.5 and 2.87 when I was 33, and now I’m 34 it’s measured as 2.7.
You may want to look into natural modified ivf as it is the most suitable for low amh. I am doing that now if you have a look at my posts and I’m finding more and more low amh ladies having success with it. I did two max dose normal ivfs before this and I wish I hadn’t bothered. It is also a lot cheaper so worth considering.

I’ve even conceived twice naturally after the two ivfs so it really isn’t the death sentence your doctor made it sound. Obviously it didn’t work out for me yet but it’s not hopeless xxxx
Hi Ebony1980! I am similar to you and Orla9298, in Dec 2016 my AMH was 3.0, in Feb 2017 it was 2.3, in Sept 2017 it was 7.5 and in Dec 2017 it was 6.2. I did not change anything or take anything to get the increase and was told it just varies. Don't give up hope, there are woman on here with lower AMH who have gone on to conceive. I was diagnosed with low AMH @ 1.3 4 years ago and my husband had a very low sperm count so we had to go straight for ICSI. Initially we were given 5-10% chance of success due to both of our problems. That actually went up when we had treatment and proved that we do respond. I started on DHEA straight away on the advice of my consultant and each round of treatment I have had embryos even though I only have a small amount of follicles.
Same as Orla, We have moved to Natural Modified IVF after 5 rounds of treatment on long protocol with lots of drugs as quality was clearly an issue for for me - we lost 2 babies.
Am now 5 weeks pregnant and terrified but very positive that the baby I am carrying was created from the body's selected and strongest egg.
There are options. Do NOT give up. If you are having to pay for treatment I would find a consultant who believes they can help you.xxx
Hi Hope your well. Just read your post and looking for some info. I've just had two rounds of ivf on nhs and it didn't work. We now have to pay for treatment and the natural or modified ivf sounds interesting. My amh is also extremely low.
I'm just a bit confused if there's less stimulation than in a typical ivf. How can they be so sure that they will get eggs?
Hi there, yes I am really well thank you. I had my first successful pregnancy and my little girl is now nearly 22 months. We are trying for a sibling but I really do think I am not far off the menopause now so it really is a very long shot!! There is a big risk that they may not get an egg as you really are probably looking at max 3 eggs, but typically 1 or 2 eggs per cycle in line with what your body would normally produce. They are just managing that ovulation with a little bit of stimulation. Because high dose drugs wasn't providing the quality for us and we usually had a good number of eggs for my low follicle count it was worth the risk for us to get something that the body had selected. I’m so sorry , but just because you have lower AMH doesn’t mean you can’t fall pregnant- it only takes one egg after all!
My amh is much much lower @5 and this was done 4 years ago when I was only 32 ; god knows what it is now! 😳
Anyway I managed to conceive naturally last year despite my low AMH ( endometriosis was found & treated ) I did miscarry but still I managed to conceive with low AMH ; there is hope.

If it was 3.8 at the last measure I'd go with that and it's not very very low. My amh was measured as 4.7. I was told to proceed with ivf asap but we had to wait a while to be eligible for nhs funding.
My clinic had no issue with my amh and said that it bears very little relation to your chance of success in their clinic. I was told there was a 75-80% chance of success despite the amh.
I didn't get loads of eggs (6) but all fertilized and were good quality and my ivf worked first time.
Thank you everybody, want a lovely community this is. I have found a clinic and am getting some of the tests done at my GP that they require. Watch this space, I will keep you posted.
As all the ladies have said here there are mixed views on what amh tells you. There was a bbc article on it recently saying it wasn’t that indicative of fertility. My clinic put probably too little focus/explanation of it but I think it does mean you won’t get ohss & probably not loads of eggs during ivf, You only need one though. Try not to be disheartened xx
There are so many mixed opinions about AmH. But most importantly there are other factors alongside this which much can be considered. You only need one! xx
My AMH was 3.2 when i was 36. It put me off having IVF but I eventually had IVF 3.5 years later (by which time the AMH would have been a lot lower). It worked first time for me, I know i was/am extremely lucky but it can happen. I was nearly 40 and imagine my AMH was probably around 2.5 ish then (its 1.7 now at nearly 43), so please please don't give up. xx
I'm in Spain so the numbers are different but basically at 39 mine came back as a 45+ year olds. I had 4 failed ivf. 2 natural pregnancies ending in mc. Was told donor eggs were the only way. Fell pregnant naturally and Am now 36 weeks.
Low reserve had nothing to do with quality.
Ivf screws your reserve using +/_15 she's a cycle when normally 1 or 2 are released.
