HSG frustration

Good morning ladies,

Can you advise me how many cycles you had before finally getting a HSG exam done?

I've just called for a second month in a row without any luck on getting the exam done. So frustrating when this is the last exam my specialist wants me to have before discussing IVF

I had the HSG done before I was referred for IVF to make sure there wasn’t a problem with my tubes , this was 3 years ago and my ivf clinic have accepted those results .

It wasn’t a long waiting list around me and I was just sent an appointment automatically, they didn’t seem to care what point of my cycle I was on. Is there only one hospital you can go to or can you ask to be referred elsewhere? If you’re really wanting to get on with it, have you investigated what the cost might be to have it done privately?

See, my letter states I have to have the HSG test on a specific day of my cycle so I have to call on the first day of my cycle.

Good suggestion though about asking to see if I can be referred to have the HSG test done at another hospital. This may be a good option for me, thank you.

I've not looked in to going private as yet

Definitely get on to your gp, also maybe get on to PALS at the local hospital and complain about there being insufficient supply of appointments- maybe ask if this procedure comes under the 18 week waiting time target, finally if it is a consultant who has referred you for this, could you ring their secretary (or at my local service there’s an infertility nurse) and ask how strict the timings have to be and explain your problem? I have learned thorough this process that if you don’t advocate strongly for yourself then no-one else is going to. I AM that woman who makes a fuss... because it works.

Hi Lizzie, thank you SO much for all the advice above, I really appreciate it!

I've just emailed my local PALS address & will call the secretary on my break later on today :-)

You go girl!

That is really frustrating. I got mine privately at the same hospital to save time. I’m afraid your GP won’t be able to help much as it is a hospital investigation. I would chase through PALS at the hospital as to why there is such a delay. Have they said why they can’t fit you in? I was not told a specific day- more a range. It might be worth finding out why they want it on a particular day. Normally the HSG is done by the radiology department so worth trying to call them as well. I feel your pain- it’s hard enough as it is without having to do the extra work of chasing things! Good luck xx

Hi Zoe, my letter was from Radiology Dept itself so when I called to make an appointment they said they had Radiologists on Annual Leave so couldn't fit me in.

I understand everyone needs to take their A/L but it's frustrating when I was told the same thing the cycle/month before.

Just emailed my local PALS to see what can be done. Thank you xo

GP suggestion is because they should be able to advise if you are able to go to another hospital, sorry I wasn’t clear on that! But maybe wait till you hear back from PALS x

How frustrating for you. My biggest wait was being referred to gynaecology. They have not discussed any options or pathways with me but sent me and DH off for various blood tests, HSG's, SA etc. We were given another appointment 6 months later (still waiting for the apt which is in July 2018) to discuss the results.

I guess the process is different throughout the country as many other ladies have had the HSG test done way before IVF was even discussed as an option

In my experience with the HSG it was simple and straightforward. On the first day of my cycle, I called the hospital and then booked me in for the following week (day 10 of my cycle).

There were roughly 5 women in the room with me 3 behind the screen at the computer, one nurse carrying out the procedure and another lovely nurse to hold my hand as I sobbed and sobbed.

The process itself is very quick but I did find it extremely painful, I found out I have a tilted cervix which is why it was so difficult to get the speculum to enter in the first place, because of this it did go completely downhill from there as I was tense and just could not relax.

Don't worry too much as every woman's experience is completely different and some women feel absolutely nothing

Keep calling the local hospital and pushing for an appointment. In my experience the ladies we are super nice and super helpful. Maybe try explaining your situation and your on a timeline from the IVF clinic? If all else fails I suggest you speak to PALS and make a complaint and try and get some support from them to book the appointment.

Good luck in your journey
