Back to work after mc

Hi guys,

We miscarried on Wednesday and are devastated. I’ve taken the rest of the week off of work (I’m a teacher, 5 and 6 year olds), but don’t know if I’m ready to go back on Monday? I’m still bleeding heavily and in pain, physically and emotionally. If you’ve miscarried, which I sincerely hope and wish you haven’t, how long did you take off work? Thanks xx

With my first I was off for 4 weeks in total - 2 were when it was happening and I had surgical management and 2 because I wasn't emotionally ready to go back to work.

With my second I had no time off as it was a bit earlier and I didn't need an operation or any intervention. I would have taken the time if I needed it but somehow I just wanted to get on with things.

I think what am trying to say is that you should listen to how you feel and take the time you need to grieve and look after yourself as best you can.

Am really sorry to hear about your miscarriage and I wish you all the best. xxx

hi, I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had 3 now and it's true what someone said to me-you don't get over it, you learn to live with it. You do a demanding job (I used to teach secondary) so my advice is don't rush back. Take time for you, both physically and emotionally. I was on supply teaching when I had my first and never went back to the school I was at on longer term. With my second which mc at 6 wks I went back after 2 days (far too early) and my third after IVF mc at 13 wks I had 2 wks off. Everyone's different but the important thing is do what's right for you and listen to your body and mind. Take good care of yourself xx

I would agree with others take more time if your still in physical pain, the emotional pain will take a long time to learn to live with. My first miscarriage I had 4 days off which I now know wasn’t enough and this time I had 4 weeks off and am only back now on light duties. I know mentally I’m not in right frame of mind to be back full time. It’s okay to put yourself first xx

I agree with everyone, take time off and give yourself some more time to heal physically and mentally.

I've always returned to work right away without time off, only because for me at those times that's what I felt I needed just to get right back into work, looking back it wasn't the best idea because I never allowed myself to grieve. I also had a couple of occasions where I felt extreme pain while working and I think not allowing myself the proper time to rest was the cause of this.

Please don't rush back, your health is more important and although mentally it will take some time to come to terms with this, a few extra weeks off will make a huge difference in terms of the physical healing.

Thinking of you xxx

I would take some time off the last thing you want to do is be surrounded by children at this time. I’m so sorry to hear this. Xx

I’m so sorry for your miscarriage. I had 2 weeks off when I had my miscarriage in September. I needed time both physically and mentally to process what had happened and let my body recover. My advice would be to take as much time as you need to get as strong as you can xx

I’m so sorry for your loss! I’ve had three miscarriages and all three times I have had 2 weeks off. You know in yourself when you feel able to return back to work, so take as long as you need. X

Two days I went back after. That was in September. I still get emotional when a see people with baby. It's hard. Just take each day as it comes. We are starting our next round in December. Take care Hope everything goes okay for you. P.s my husband has been my rock and me his rock. Xx

I’m also a year one teacher, but part time. My first miscarriage I had two weeks off and only went back for the last week of term then had another two weeks holiday. The second miscarriage was physically much easier, just a heavy period really, and I had my usual four days off that I have every week and went back in on the Monday, again only for one week then it was half term.

For me, I don’t want to be back at work whilst still bleeding. It just feels wrong. My school and colleagues understood and the gp signed me off with no questions.

Good for you honey! Keep on being strong like this. God bless you xxxooo

I took 2 weeks off after a surgical miscarriage and the gp signed me off no problems from work.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I have decided to take a week, the bleeding is slowing and I think the routine may help. I’m having string feelings of guilt though for ‘going back to normal’...is this usual? Thanks all, so sorry to hear about your losses xxx

You’ll have all sorts of emotions and all are normal. Look after yourself and your partner xx

You poor thing, it's so hard to know isn't it? I'm in a similar situation right now. This is my second m/c and for the first one (which happened over a weekend) I went straight to work on Monday. I had just started at the company, only been there a few weeks, so I didn't feel I could take any time off. This time I've been there nearly a year and the doctor has signed me off for a week and offered longer if I need it. I really do send lots of love to you at this horrible time, and hope you have plenty of love and support around you xxxx
