Hi, one of my fallopian tubes is blocked. Initially i had a laparoscopy as they thought it may be caused by endometriosis. This was to check the overall health and state of the tubes. Everything came back healthy just one tube is completely blocked.

I have a follow up on Thursday so o can let you know what they recommend?

Good luck with everything x

Hi how did they find out that it might be cos of endometriosis? i mean they didn't tell me any reason so just wondering how do i know the cause behind it? how was the lap if you dont mind me asking like was it painful? how long take to recover? any side effects? have you ever done IVF? im confused whether i should go for lap or straight to IVF ?

Hey, they thought it may be endo related because of other symptoms I have (bloating/back pain) and I have a family history. I think I lap is the only real way to find out how healthy the uterus and tube is.

Everything came back healthy from mine, just a blocked tube. Not sure what they will recommend (if anything). From what I have read and as Diane states below it all depends on where the tube is blocked.

I have never done IVF. We have been TTC for just under 2 years and startes having tests beginning of this year. The hsg showed a blocked tube and then they recommended the lap. As one tube is still okay, not sure if they will recommend IVF or tell me to wait a while. Unfortunately it's all waiting!

Hi MK05 I would say to have the laparoscopy before IVF, that way if the tube needs to come out you can have this done before IVF. I had a hydrosalpinx in my left tube (fluid) so had it removed. When they went in they found I had severe endometriosis as well so I had to have a further surgery for that. Endo should always be suspected in my opinion if tubal damage is present, as endo can wreak havoc on them unfortunately xxxxx

I read somewhere that fertility massage and castor oil packs help with that. But I have no experience in it myself. Good luck

Hi MK05. Fallopian tubes can be difficult to unblock, unless by debris at the womb end, when a selective salpinography might be performed to unblock it. If further up the tube, it could involve micro-surgery with no guarantee of success. If at the open end (fimbriae) specialists often recommend that it is clipped or removed to prevent any excess lubrication that naturally occurs to leak back down into the womb, preventing a developing embryo from implanting. Then of course, it just may be left as it is, you will need to discuss it further with your specialist. Hope it can be sorted for you. Diane

Thanks Diane for your reply. It's really depressing though.

Hi MK05. So sorry about that. Often they just leave them alone. It becomes an issue when both tubes are blocked and you need to have IVF. Your specialist will give you good advice. Diane

Hey, sorry to hear about your troubles with TTC. :( Infertility is such a hell! I certainly knew that there are surgeries to clear the blocked tubes, but little did I know that it's not guaranteed. After reading all the responses, especially Diane's elaborate one I'm pretty convinced that IVF could be a fair deal for you. The eggs being extracted directly from ovaries and the embie transferred to womb thereafter leaves less scope for the blocked fallopian tube to spoil it up for you. It's just my own perception, obviously, it's entirely up to you to decide and I hope you find the best of solutions. Wish you luck and lots of love! :)

I have one blocked tube too, because of endometriosis, and I was told they can't unblock it and we need to go to ivf. My husband wanted to hold off on ivf because of the cost, but even using ovulation trackers we haven't had any luck.

I also have a low egg count though, so that reduces our chances, originally we were told one blocked tube is ok because as long as the other one works. In saying that though, my endo is getting worse each month because it's difficult to manage while ttc.

The ivf specialist also told me not to have another laparoscopy before the ivf because every time they cut you open they risk causing damage.
