HSG fears again!

I'm up worrying about my HSG tomorrow. Despite having trawled through everyone's experiences on here and reading lots of reassuring things, I'm still so anxious. Lots of love and luck to you all xx

Hi JC

I will admit my HSG was a little sore, but it wasn't awful, and you know what, it doesn't take very long and it is worth it to be 100% sure that you are all clear on your tubes etc. I can't comment on your husband's side but obviously with ICSI they can often get enough good sperm even if the whole batch isn't top notch (as I understand it from what's been said to us) so perhaps that's why they are less concerned with him.

Try not to worry too much about the HSG today, as with a smear test it could hurt more if you are tense so focus on keeping calm, breathe deeply and think of England!

Good luck!

Hi I was scared of this but it was fine, over and done in 15 mins no pain at all. Take 2 pain killers an hour before. Just tell them your nervous they understand X

I was really worried as I'm a wimp & squeamish too. It was fine, undignified but you'll get used to this! I took painkillers beforehand as suggested but I really didn't need them. A slight sharp pain as dye went on but that was it. Worst bit was paying the bill afterwards.

Mine was absolutely fine and there was no need for all the worrying I did up to it. They ladies were lovely that did it and made me feel at easy. It was just when they put the little tube in it hurt for about 3 seconds, as soon as i put my legs flat and went into the machine I was fine and it was over quick. I took 2 paracetamol an hour before. I was in and out in about 15 minutes my dad who gave me a lift couldn't believe how fast i was!

I was dreading my HSG, id only had a smear before so it was my first 'gynae experience'. It was more undignified than anything, similar to a smear but they flush a dye though your tubes, this gives approximately 10-15 seconds of sharp pain (like an intense period pain) but then its all over!! I had no bleeding after and felt fine. Took about 20 mins in total, but most of that was preparation. The radiologist even shows menthe screen when the dye went through so knew my results there and then!! Easier said, bit relax and its more comfortable. Good luck.

Well, to be totally honest I think that the HSG was the worst part of treatment, in my case anyway. I was quite nervous, but one of the nurses held my hand and tried to distract me by asking me random things. Fortunately it didn't take too long and I felt fine immediately after, but 6 hrs later I felt really bad, I felt like my ovaries were two big water balloons and every step was sore. I was very warm for a few min where I nearly fainted, but it passed. I don't know what caused it, but I had to lie down after coming home and for the rest of the day. The next day I felt fine again. This is probably a unique case, but it made the rest of my treatment feel like piece of cake. Fingers crossed that everything will work out fine for you.

Thank you so much Diane, I was very overwhelmed as this was my first time ever in hospital but the team that were carrying out the procedure were extremely understanding. It was quite painful at one point, but mostly uncomfortable and mentally upsetting. I've been told I have a couple of weeks wait for the results, however the radiographer did say that it looked like the dye spilled so fingers crossed. I am a little concerned with the amount of ache I'm experiencing today. It's all around my lower abdomen, but also in my lower back. The whole area feels taught, and the ache is akin to a fresh bruise only deeper under the skin. I do have a pretty physical job so it could be over excursion but should I bother a doctor if it hasn't gone by tomorrow? That will be two days post HSG. Thank you again :)

Hi JC10133, how are you feeling today? Hopefully much better! I'm wondering why you have to wait two weeks for the results as I got mine straight away. Fingers crossed that everything is working out alright.

Hi,

My HSG was painful but I think it's partly because I wasn't prepared for it to be any worse then a normal internal scan and then got myself worked up when I saw the room and that there were 3 people in there. You sound like you e down your research so you'll be much better prepared than I was.

I suggest taking painkillers before you have it and take a wash bag with you so that you have your own comforts for afterwards as they should offer you shower facilities.

For me, the actual procedure was painful but afterwards I was fine and felt a little silly for having a little cry and losing my dignity.

Just remember, even if it hurts, it is a progressive step towards the right treatment. The nurses and dr will have seen loads of ladies for the HSG and I'm sure there will be lots who were scared etc so they will know to look after you and offer support.

Good luck xx
