Hey had 15 eggs collected yesterday and they don't think will fertilise which is a real shock to us (and a surprise for the clinic) has anyone been in this situation and gone on to make an embryo within 48 hours? Please help, feeling empty 😢

Hi Helen-54. It could be that they are a little immature and maybe it will be possible to have them mature in the lab and then fertilize them. Fingers crossed and I do hope that they can be used. Diane

Thankyou Diane, will they naturally mature overnight or is that a different process?

Hi. They will need careful monitoring, and it all depends at what stage they are at. May take a few days, but they will let you know soon as possible what is happening. It may be that if they can mature them and fertilise them, they will then store them frozen and use them at a later date, so be prepared for that. Should this happen it will be upsetting but at least they will have been able to save them, and they will be sfae as frozen embryos. Thinking of you and good luck! Diane

Thankyou Diane, that would amazing, right now I feel like it's all been for nothing. Was going so well until today, hence the shock. They said this only happens in about 1% of cases. 15 eggs, hoping for a miracle one by tomorrow but I know it's highly unlikely. Could it be because I'm in my forties? I appreciate that was a lot of eggs for my age but I also appreciate its quality not quantity... Please let me know your thoughts? Thankyou

Hi. Until you are stimulated and get through to egg collection, we can't tell what condition the eggs are in until they are retrieved. It may be due to age, but depends upon hormone levels too. You had a large amount of eggs for someone in their forties. This could be that you were on a high dose of stims, I don't know. However, keep positive, as it still could happen. If it doesn't, then perhaps you need to rethink your protocol if you decide to try again. I had a lady a couple of years ago, that had a similar problem at 44yrs of age, but they managed to get 2 eggs to mature and fertilise - one took which was great! Thinking of you and good luck! xx

Thankyou so much Diane. It's helpful to hear from you on such a difficult day. I was on 375 of gonal f. I will know more tomorrow but if no success will chat more about protocols, i don't really understand the options. Thankyou X

Hi

Did you do IVF or ICSI? It's actually commonish for people to have failed fertilisation on IVF. I had one egg fertilise and it was slow to develop but turned into a perfect embryo albeit no successful pregnancy. PM me if you need to chat x

Hi kell27, Thankyou. Clinic just called and they confirmed none fertilised and so it will be icsi next time, wished if had it first time but it wasn't an option. So devastated. I know I shouldn't have got my hopes up but once they had 15 eggs I thought there was a chance of at least 1 fertilising.. Did you try icsi? Thankyou for your support x

I really hate that clinics don't tell you from outset that failed fertilisation can happen; it prepares you just incase. Unfortunately I tried ICSI but I had other issues so none fertilised there but that is VERY VERY RARE and my new clinic is questioning what happened in my last cycle so please don't think this will happen to you. Look after yourself xx

Thankyou kell27, it's a tough journey and I'm sorry that you've been through so much already. The clinic are still saying how shocked they are that this has happened. Apparently icsi has about a 70% success rate so good but as ever no guarantees. Thankyou for your support, it's keeping me going at the moment, I hope you are getting the answers and guidance you need at your new clinic and best of luck with your new treatment. Xx

My first round I had 3 eggs collected and none fertilised , I was devastated, I didn't expect it to happen one bit. That was ivf. The eggs weren't mature and apparently it only happens to 1 in 200 people.

Second round they upped the meds slightly and did icsi . 5 eggs collected all mature 3 fertilised. 2 were put back in on day 3 , and I'm currently 32 weeks pregnant! . So don't give up , the nurses can tweak everything to make things smoother next time. But hopefully you won't need a next time , good luck for this round xx

Hi clairol, Thankyou and congratulations! Your support is helpful and your success gives much hope! Has now been confirmed we will need to start all over but probably icsi, doc will confirm later. Best of luck with your little one/s xxx

Hi sorry to hear that , I know exactly how you are feeling, you feel so alone. I remember scouring the Internet for answeres to why this had happened and why to me ? What had I done wrong ect? . Remember you have done nothing wrong , it can just take time for the docs and nurses to get meds and timings right, as everyone is different.

I am actually 37 weeks with one baby girl , must of pressed wrong key before. I never thought it would happen for me , but miracle can happen. Take care, the docs will have learned a lot from you of this cycle and will

Use this info to give you the best chance next time xxx

Thankyou clairol, see pleased to hear of your success, could be an exciting Xmas! Just chatted to doc and they are still shocked themselves. No indicators of why so icsi it is. Hopefully new cycle starts later next month. Have a fantastic Xmas with your new addition, hope it all goes well. Thankyou for your help and support, keeps me going xx

Thankyou eski, I really appreciate your support - and hugs! it's been a difficult few days. Taking to the docs it seems I'm the unluckiest person out there, to be in the less than 1% is quite a shock. So icsi next time hopefully cycle starting in mid Jan, sigh. How did your egg collection go? Are you feeling ok? Thanks again and take it easy for a few days xx

You're welcome! Always here if you need a shoulder! This journey is so tough! EC went well thanks, I got 6 eggs which for me is good as I've only got one working ovary & a whole load of problems cause by endometriosis. I'm very bloated but doing ok otherwise. Make sure you take care of yourself, lots of nice things and plan yourself a treat or something to look forward to, you need something happy. Much love xx

I'm really sorry to hear about your disappointment. Treatment seems such a lottery and even when you get a high number of eggs nothing is quarantined. I got 13 eggs on my first round and the embryologist did give the warning that we might not get any embryos. In the end we got 2 good quality embryos but still a BFN. We've had ICSI on all 3 attempts and only ever got 2 embryos, 2 BFNs and waiting for FET from attempt 3.

Don't give up, it can still happen.
