Tubbal cannulation : blocked Fallopian tubes ! Save the tubes!

Hi

I thought I would write a post about a recent yet expensive procedure I have just had done.

My fertility consultant wanted me to have my Fallopian tubes clipped or removed as they are blocked (again) at the egg end not the uterus end.Ive had a lap in 2011 and had them cleared , I have endometriosis , fibroids and PCOS and blocked tubes .

After a course of injections to slow down and kill-off the endometriosis (which worked by the way according to scans !) it turned out my tubes are blocked.

I went to a private clinic in London to have Tubbal Cannulation, this is where they insight a catheter into you and put a dye in known as a HSG ( you normally have this dye test at your hospital to see if the dye spills out and your tubes are unblocked) with this dye in the doctor inserts a plastic tube hooks this into the start of the Fallopian tube then a metal wire soft rod goes insides that and is pushed into the plastic tube and travels all the way up inside your Fallopian tube pushing all the gunk that's blocking it.

All I can say is that it is extremely painful, the recovery time is 5 days, they give you a local an theistic , if you can take a nerve calmer before you go in ie diazepam I would recommend it I wish I had done that. Aftercare is ibruofem and paracetamol . And a course of two different antibiotics.

I was successful in clearing my left tube my right one didn't fully clear but doc says with the antibiotics , procedure and possible HSG may flush it out!

The cost spoof this was £2600 including the consultation! The doctor has now prescribed my clomid to start next month.

Am I mad to pay for this operation on all hope and faith it works, probably, put I may be pregnant in 3-6 months time and I'd rather not be cut open yet.

Anyway I hope this info helps. If you have blocked tubes the uterus end success rates are 80% if it's the egg end it's 30-50%

Hannah what a story, though I haven't had this issue myself there will be women on this forum who have and will appreciate you sharing your experience and thoughts. Yes, it's all very expensive but we have to try don't we. Your consultant sounds proactive and I wish you the best of luck with the clomid, take good care of yourself and keep us posted X

Hello yes I had similar to you, the HSG is standard procedure (except you do not get anaesthetic in NHS!), and I also had my tubes removed eventually. I then became pregnant from IVF. Cant you get surgery etc on NHS?

Hannah78 profile image
Hannah78 in reply to Katrina13

Yes I can get surgery and IVF on the NHS but I want to keep my tubes and avoid being cut open again .

What I am looking for if anyone else has had the cannulation procedure ( rods into the tubes ) and how long the recovery time was for them .

Yes I'm having to have my tubes remove via lap :(

Hi hannah78, Thats a shame... i only just realised how long ago you had this procedure done, now at the end ive seen that you are now having to have your tubes removed😦 that is devestating! I recently have decided to look into other options before going in for surgery again! My tubes are blocked at the ovary end so this method may not have been so successful for me in the long run but im saddened to hear you wernt successful. May i ask why you have resulted in having to have them removed now instead of the clipping?

Hi Hannah, can you please tell me where you got the procedure done? I am trying to find a good place which does not kill me!

thanks!

Hi. Does anyone else have experience in having tubes unblocked? I have only one tube, as the other was removed due to an ectopic pregnancy. An hsg test recently showed that the remaining tube is blocked nearer the uterus. I would prefer to try to unblock it if possible.

Hi cuddles78

I'm booked in to have the Tubal cannulation done at the regency international clinic in London. I'm not sure what state my tubes are in so don't know if it's yet possible to have this procedure done, but the hsg is performed first so I will know for sure after I've had this done. It's £2600 for the procedure, which I find very cheap after spending thousands of pounds on ivf!

It is £200 for consultation, £1000 for the hsg & &1400 for the Tubal cannulation.

I will let you know how it goes (if it does happen).

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ninaoom,

I am guessing by jow you would have the procedure. Hope it was successful. To be honest, I don't mind the cost after 3 unsuccessful IVFs. Been on the waiting list of a Dr in Solihull since end of last year but i keep hearing is the facility ia not ready. Gets even more frustrating when had hoped thinga would have been different by the second half of the year...

Hi Sammy, I am just about to have this procedure done myself but I can't find many reviews online, hope you don't mind me asking.. how did you get on? Was it successful in unblocking your tubes? Have you had a follow up? Thanks

Hi Jodie

Sorry for late reply. I was diagnosed Oct 2016 that both my tubes were blocked it was a proximal blockage. I went to regency clinic in July had procedure done. The doctor managed to fully unblock my left tube and partially my right. The staff are lovely. I was given clomid after procedure on my second cycle. I am going next week to have a scan to see how my ovulation is getting along. I would advise people to go down this lane because it's cheaper than IVF. I'm hoping that my scan goes well. Keep you all posted.

in reply to Sammy786

Hi, Have you managed to get pregnant after the procedure?

I am thinking of doing the procedure but wondering if it successful once the tubes are open.

Hello Jodie, did you end of having the the op? I had this done last week. I'm looking for success stories of becoming pregnant after the procedure

I also had the fallopian tube treatment at done privately at The London Regency International clinic carried out May 2015, my left tube was clear and the right tube had too much blockage so he wasn't able to unblock that one. Advice was to try naturally straight after the procedure but unfortunately my 4 year relationship also broke down same time. A year later I met my current partner and we have been trying a year now without success, I am now 42 and I went to see a fertility Dr at Guys Hospital recently who has advised me to remove the right blocked tube before any further IVF since the fluid (Hydrosalphix) can leak into my lining and affect the success of treatment. Great, that's at least £3k for that treatment and £6k for IVF! Has anyone here had success with IVF after removing their blocked tube?

Hannah78 profile image
Hannah78 in reply to Ashley888

Hi Ashley, I had to have both my tubes removed . I went to the London regency clinic to try and have my tubes cleared but it was unsuccessful. Was referred to ivf they said I needed them

Removed I could choose to clip or have them cut and Burnt. I choose to have them clipped. A year later started ivf treatment and now have a ten month old baby girl. I’m 40 btw. So it can happen x

Hello everyone, I'm booked in for my tubes to be unblocked this Saturday at Regency, how did it go for you girls? I'm scared!

Goodier26 profile image
Goodier26 in reply to Lawsy77

Hello I had this procedure done last week, it's really not that bad you will be back to yourself within a week. The doctor advised to starting trying ASAP and advised if it's going happen they say the first 6 months after the OP gives you the best chance. I'm on here looking for success stories would be good to stay in touch I've searched the Web high and low to connect with other women in the same situation xx

Lawsy77 profile image
Lawsy77 in reply to Goodier26

Hello, well I went for it on Saturday but the dye must have unblocked something as I didn't need the rest of the ok done! Still can't really believe it. The dyetest was extremely painful that's why I think it cleared the tubes as most people with clear tubes don't say it's too bad ( and I have scoured the internet for hours on this :/)

The Dr prescribed me Clomid for next cycle..I ovulated the day after the dye test so am hoping for a miracle this month. Kind of back in the game..

Goodier26 profile image
Goodier26 in reply to Lawsy77

Amazing definitely sounds like it's been unblocked and looks like we ovulated on the same say Managed to do the deed they say the sooner you do it the better praying for a miracle. How long have you been trying ?x

Lawsy77 profile image
Lawsy77 in reply to Goodier26

Think we could do with a bit of luck! I've been trying with my husband for 3 years - we had 3 ivf's and one resulted at a miscarriage at 7 weeks. I also had a miscarriage when I was 33 ( I'm nearly 41 now). Hoping for the best, I'll be scared if we do get pregnant that I'll lose it again..but many people have them and go on to be fine I guess..the whole thing is hard and scary and seems so easy for most other people.and age isn't on my side. But I don't give up easy :) what's your situation? x

Goodier26 profile image
Goodier26 in reply to Lawsy77

Trying since 2012. Never been pregnant, 3 failed attempts of IVF 2014 was told tubes were open demanded a retest 2017 both tubes block, tubal cannulation last week one tube open going to give the next 6 months another shot and if it doesn't happen we will walk away knowing we did everything. I am feeling positive though I have a good feeling about this cycle. I turn 32 next month. We're are you from x

Lawsy77 profile image
Lawsy77 in reply to Goodier26

I feel for you. That's a rough deal. I'm hopeful too though for the next 6 months. Did you see Dr Okosun? And did he suggest Clomid for you? Will make you ovulate more in a cycle so more chance of fertilisation. At 32 your eggs should be pretty good though :) I'm in Southend, Essex. Where are you? X

Goodier26 profile image
Goodier26 in reply to Lawsy77

Hey I'm from Manchester,I had my op done at St Marys by a DR Seif I remember when I was just coming round still high on morphine I asked another doctor and they refused because I already ovulate, wasn't really sure how the rest of the conversation went but I may give them a call tomorrow to see if I can get this. My last cycle I went private with care fertility my eggs were pretty good quality. I've ordered about 60 ovulation tests online, this is my last shot I need to give it my all. IVF is evil I wouldn't do it again if someone gave me the money!!! what an emotional roller coaster. 2016 I struggled the most mentally but today I am definitely in a better head space. Whatever happens I know i will be ok. I have a beautiful loving husband and an amazing step daughter. should this door close I'm sure there will be another one waiting to be open. I Refused to be unhappy. Xxxx

Hey Goodier26. I just saw this forum and had to let you know that it does work. I had the TCTC op at the regency clinic in March 2012. They cleared my right tube but couldn’t clear my left as it was starting to get really uncomforatbale. Nothing happened after that & I thought it hadn’t worked. Then in March 2013 BAM...I was pregnant. However I lost that baby due to miscarriage which the doctors say was a natural cause. Then in October 2013 AGAIN I got pregnant and that baby was fine. So it does work and it actually took me more than 6 months. It was a whole year for me. Anyway the reason I came on this forum is because I haven’t been able to get pregnant again since my last baby so thinking of going to the regency clinic again and seeing if maybe I need to have the procedure again.

Had hope Ladies it happened for me so it can happen for you too.

Lawsy77 profile image
Lawsy77 in reply to mmc224

I'd say go for it. I didn't need the cannulation in the end but I think having the dye test helped - best to re-test for peace of mind for knowing what's going on in your body x I wish I had re-tested sooner.
