Help on recovery after surgery.

Hi guys not been on for a while. So back in augast I hit my target weight and was told I would be put on the waiting list for a laparoscopy. So I finally had it done on the 21st of December!!! Anyway originally I was supposed to be having a laparoscopy, drainage of my cysts and removal of my tubes due to suspected hydrosalpinx .However before I went into theatre I'd agreed with the surgeon that if he thought he could save the tubes with a repair job he would would, but whatever would maximise our chances of pregnancy.

what originally was supposed to be a 45 min surgery turned in 2 1/2 hours with them having to do extra work. Turned out I did have hydrosalpinx in both tubes!and the right was apparently very distended. My 4cm cysts turned out to actually be 10cm and 7 cm on each side.and the left size was drained then burnt.however the right the cyst was compromising my ovary, however it was removed. They weren't able to remove my tubes as apparently they were so bad they have stuck to my ovaries? So to have removed them they would have hAd to take the ovaries too. So they have been clipped. They also released adheasions to my pelvic wall and adheasions from my left ovary. They also told me that they would do a scrape, the second surgeon said it could help things "stick" should we start ivf within the next 3 months.

Healing has been a really slow process, 2 weeks on I'm still in a fair bit of pain and was told to have another week of rest. I feel so emotional (not sure why) but after only just finishing bleeding from the op on the 21st I'm now bleeding quite heavily and I'm in such pain.. I'm presuming it's my period. But I just wanted to hear people's experiences, recovery time etc..

Sorry to hear you are still feeling bad after your lap. But you MUST give yourself time to heal - everyone is different, and it takes everyone different lengths of time to get back to normal. After my first diagnostic lap in 2013, I had 1 week off work, but still had a few sharp burning sensations/stabs when I went back to work and I was very tired. You will feel emotional too - after my long lap last year (5.5 hours) I was emotional for ages! It will pass soon, and you will feel strong again. I did have 6 weeks off work after this long lap, but they did do quite a lot inside and on my bowel so I was advised to take longer than 4 weeks to heal properly. Sorry to hear of all your inside troubles :( - this is why though, its good to have a lap because they never really know the full extent until they put the camera inside and have a good look.

My first period after my main lap was awful too I'm afraid! I guess when you think about it - its bound to be pretty bad after all the digging/prodding and removing they've done in there. The second one after the lap wasn't AS bad, but still pretty painful, but that's probably the adenomyosis as well as the endometriosis.

They do uterine scraps for some ladies prior to IVF yes, so that is good that you are getting that. Good luck with your IVF journey and wishing you a speedy recovery from this lap. Drink lots of water and move around the house gently to keep your circulation going etc.

Take care X

Hello Lisa-Jane

Nice to have you back. You have certainly been through a lot so I'm not surprised you are feeling emotional. It doesn't seem right to me that you are in still in pain did the Consultant talk to you about what you shouldn't be doing during your recovery time? I have only had minor surgery so I can't really answer your questions. I wouldn't have thought your period would have started that quick because of what you have been through. It's been 4 weeks since my procedure (ectopic pregnancy) and they said it would take about 6 weeks for my period to arrive and it's been recommended I have 3 - 4 cycles before I try again. I would really recommend that you speak to your Consultant about your concerns. Good Luck. Tasha

Hi Lisa-Jane, I'm not surprised you're feeling emotional, you've been through a lot. If you're in a lot of pain I would suggest speaking to the hospital or your GP as they may be able to give you better pain medication. Otherwise, good luck with your recovery x
