Multiple failed ivf, what next?

Any tips on what I shd do after multiple failed ivf cycles? Example:

1. Any supplements that I should take to improve my health?

2. Does acupuncture even work? I’ve not tried them personally as my doc said it’s not scientifically proven to work

3. What kind of food I should take more to improve my health?

4. I’m considering PGS if my upcoming frozen cycles don’t work. Any advice on that?

5. I’m been feeling broken and depressed for a while. Any tips on how to get back on ur feet?

Hi seha04, it’s really bloody tough isn’t it. I’m sorry you’re having to go through this. I can only offer to you what I’ve been doing to improve our chances as I’m no expert.

1. The usual multivit, folic acid, vit d, and coq10/ubiquinol.

2. I was sceptical about acupuncture but I’m doing it now for my 2nd cycle and am thoroughly enjoying it. One session in particular just as I was starting stimms my head was in a bad place and I had a “possession” treatment and it really helped me get back in the game. Can’t attest to it actually helping me get pregnant though....

3. I think the Mediterranean diet is widely touted as good for male and female fertility. Generally speaking a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle is the usual.

4. Sorry no idea, we haven’t done PGS.

5. We’ve all been here too and it’s horrible. This is what I’ve done. Having a plan with actions to look forward to helps me to give me some kind of control and back up. I also try to get some fresh air and sunshine (vit d). Speak to your other half and family about your struggles. I also need to be careful how much I spend in my head ruminating on negative thoughts, it’s a vicious cycle that gets me nowhere. So I write down these thoughts and then actively redirect my thoughts away.

Good luck my lovely, I hope you start to feel better soon. One day at a time. Xx

Hi there, sorry to hear about your failed attempts at IVF. Hugs for you!! I know it's really hard to feel any optimistic when in your situation but trust me there will be success some day.... and you've got to move ahead believing there would be. It's good that you're already exploring ways to make the results better. If you don't mind I'd like to know if you or the doc have a clear reason on why your IVF failed? What were your infertility troubles? It's right that accupuncture doesn't boost your fertility really.... all it does is to make you relax which I personally believe is a good way to ensure the body is and emotions feels reuvinated. it helps when you're in TWW or to sqeeze out the stress off assisted fertility procedures but alone it is redundant.

Coming back to your problem, I have been digging a lot on IVF lately as I'm supposed to go on one when we have the sufficient funds.... the diet need not be a stringent one unless the doc mentioned it to be... just eat healthy and include some good fats to keep you at the best of your health.

Hi! Thanks for replying to me :).

Well, no clear reasons were given, the doc just suspected that it could be due to poor egg quality n that my embryos are chromosomally abnormal, therefore it failed to implant and even when they implanted, it led to chemical pregnancies. I have done additional tests prior to my cycles and everything seemed fine, even my uterus lining all fine.

I plan to do pgs in my next fresh cycle to check on my eggs before I proceed with transfer.

I just feel like my doc is just going thru the motions and didn’t even recommend or suggest ways to improve my cycles. She didn’t event suggest pgs in my first 2 fresh cycles... i have to research on my own. Might even change doc/clinic in my next fresh cycle.

Now, I have 2 day-6 frozen blastocysts left, will b going for another frozen cycle soon and hope for the best. :-(

I feel like ivf is the only option for me as I’m only left with 1 fallopian tube (had to remove the other coz of ectopic) and the doc said that my other tube is not too healthy.

ivf is soooo expensive! I’m from singapore and over here, the government co-funds for 3 fresh and 3 frozen cycles, I’ve already utilised most of my benefits so will need to pay for my next cycles if this one does not work.

I do hope that you’ll be able to start your treatments soon! Mind sharing your story? :)

It's certainly more frustating when you do not have a clear reason for the all the dissapointments you're going through. Sorry to hear about your loss/losses ... did you had chemicals often or could see a pattern? Poor egg quality and chromosomal anomaly are like class apart in screwing up your chances but then it will only add onto the other. Plus you have one tube I think that's too much really. You were pretty sorted about IVF due to your condition then why didn't you consider PGS/ PGD right on the previous cycles?

Back to your problem, each one is a sure shot to destroy your TTC plans and you have all three of them. Some medications does help poor egg quality like CoQ, DHEA etc... I have read about them... so you better talk to the doc if putting you on any could help. Rest I think PGS of viable embryo will be able to solve.

Well, the doc didn’t even suggest pgs in the first 2 fresh cycles (pgs can only be done on new/fresh cycle, according to my doc) so we didn’t take tt into consideration and we didn’t think our eggs were going to be this way. I’m really considering changing hosp/doc for my next fresh cycle. Sigh.

yes, it's done on fresh embryos usually.... not after thawing. But then it is not applicable only for fresh transfers. As far as I know they scan all the viable embryo and then select the genetically perfect one (or close to perfect one among the lot) for transfer. Now suppose if there's more than 2 such embies or there's no twin transfer in your regime the remaining PGS tested embryos that looks promising goes into freezing. I simply elaborate this cause your doc not suggesting PGS this for first 2 cycle inspite of a history of chemical pregnancy pattern that might indicate to chromosomal anomaly seems like they are not passing on the full story. So I wrote down whatever I knew on the matter hoping it'll offer more clarity. Yeah, I too guess changing the doc or clinic would be a wise idea as there seems to be several inconsistency in their intension to help you succeed in the IVF.

Yeah, I wished I’ve done pgs earlier, but then again, it’ll be even more depressing if the test results show that all eggs are not normal.. but at least it’ll save me the trouble of going thru the cycle process. Pgs also doesn’t come cheap in my country. :(

How about u? Are u currently going thru iui/ivf or trying naturally?

I am on my second cycle and had 2 failed so far without reason or just the doctor didn't tell me what can be the problem ( they said that the embryos were looking healthy /4BB/3BB) and my lining was 8mm both time

Had 2 ectopics on the past but still have both tubes (one blocked and one tissue scar)

I do believe that (after reading on Google ) having still the tubes can be a reason for not implant after all

My doctor keeps saying that is not a reason, just bad luck and to think positive

Seha04 in reply to Frussy

Yeah. My doc said that blocked tube/tube with scar tissue can be a contributing factor to failed ivf as the embryo can implant there and result in an ectopic/chemical. Another reason for failure is the chromosome abnormality.

All the best for your upcoming ivf! Have lots of rest and don’t over stress! Update me on the progress! :)

I'm sorry to hear this, hun. It is hard to determine the exact reason for failure of IVF. But even an idea of the possible cause of failure - age, quality of eggs/sperm, health of uterus, etc. All this could help in planning the treatment in a way that tackles the very problem and allows for better chances of success. We usually keep insisting on using their own eggs, or going for the treatment in a certain manner. even after several failed attempts at IVF. Honestly, sometimes it works. But if your IVF has not resulted in success after many attempts, it might be an indication for change of strategy. If the eggs produced are not enough, a change in medication protocol might help. If you have PCOS or thyroid problems, you might be asked to see an endocrinologist to bring your hormones to a normal level. so as to prepare the body for a healthy pregnancy. Failure of IVF is hard on everybody, but it happens either because the embryos you are producing are not healthy or your body is not ready to carry a pregnancy. Anyway, do not despair!! Choose a competent, experienced infertility specialist who can take you closer to looking for the reasons for failure of IVF in your case. and provide you with solutions that can take you closer to having your baby. I found all this in Bio texcom clinic, doctors there are amazing experts, they did their best to guide us through to success. Cannot be thankful enough.

Sorry to hear this. Just sharing me treatment experience. Years ago we optioned for surgery hoping that we would then be able to get pregnant naturally afterwards. My Dr cleaned up a good chunk of the endo and drained a cyst I had on my right ovary. (That being less invasive than completely removing it for my ovary). Some time later I was being rushed to the emergency in beyond immense pain. It took the doctors hours to figure out what was wrong with me. It turned out that cyst re-filled and ruptured. That was a ton on me. The only good thing about it is that I was still able to produce some viable eggs. Our further road narrowed to surrogacy in Kyiv with them..
