Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone would know how to get in 1200 calories per day when reducing sugars, carbs, and limiting fruit to one cup per day. Ever since my fatty liver diagnosis, I’ve literally been starving, taking in around 700-800 calories a day. Also, I was told by dr. and a dietitian that fatty fish, nuts, olive oils, was good for fatty liver. Every time I eat these, I get right side pain. Does anyone else experience this? I was diagnosed by ultrasound about 5 weeks ago. My primary dr had her secretary call me with the diagnosis. She said “ you have fatty liver, just watch your diet”. Well, I immediately called the fatty liver clinic at Yale and made an appt. Unfortunately, I’m not getting seen till end of June. I’ve been on my own trying to figure this whole diagnosis out. I had to find my own dietitian also. Nobody at the clinic will answer questions until you are seen. My AST/ALT levels were 24/58..... I’ve followed the advice of dietitian, and now my AST/ALT levels are 35/70. Should I be doing something else? I went from no exercise to 30 minutes on treadmill every day. Thank you for any advice.

I eat more grilled chicken than anything and I usually hit my calorie goal. Please eat more than 800 calories a day that is very very low for anyone.

I would try and get some grilled chicken, almonds, eggs, even some low carb pita bread.

But my calories goal is 2.1k a day but im 6'4 250lb male.

Your liver enzymes could be elevated due to you essentislly starving yourself as well.

Thank you. I do eat chicken, walnuts, very little fruit because I have to watch my sugar. It’s very hard to keep carbs down when your supposed to eat lots of vegetables, especially leafy greens. My dietitian told me to go by “my plate”, which is 1/4 protein, 1/4 whole grain, 1/2 plate of fruit and vegetables. I’m only coming up with 800 calories, unless I eat more protein. My cholesterol has been high too, so I stopped eating egg yolks, just egg whites. I’ll try to eat more, not easy. Thanks for responding.

What helped me was buying a food scale, calculating what I needed to lose 1 to 2lbs a week in a calorie counting app. After that is just being religious with tracking what you eat. I know it can be hard to get all your calories in especially with a limited diet. It sucks trying to eat so many veggies and fruit. But I eat 3 meals a day. Here is a example of my meals minus the sheer amount of water I drink(alot)

Breakfast: 2 hard boiled eggs, 25 almonds. Black coffee.

Lunch: 200 grams of chicken, apple, vegatvale.

Post workout: whey protein shake with unsweetened almond milk.

Dinner: 200 grams chicken, vegetable, low carb pita cooked in 20 grams olive oil, grape fruit.

Well NY, let's start with a couple of basics. When they just say fatty liver that encompasses a lot of ground so there are a lot f details that you will learn and Yale should give you a good workup. It generally is recommended not to lose weight too fast as that can actually aggravate things for some people so consider the idea that you don't have to suffer through 800 calories a day. If you go to a low carb, high fiber, proper protein, and unsaturated fats you may be able to reach your goals without feeling starved. You liver enzymes are a little disturbed but they don't really tell you much at this point.

Here is a link to our suggestion for someone who has cirrhosis and you don't suggest that you have that issue so you can easily modify these suggestions to suit your own preferences. I admire how you have attacked the problem but kinder and gentler is probably smarter and easier.

Losing weight too quickly and drastically cutting calories makes things worse for me. That could be what’s happening with you. The weight loss should be slow and steady. Good luck 🙂

Dr. Berg on youtube has very detailed and easy to understand videos that help you manage your diet and improve the health of your liver.

Also, as someone pointed out a scale really helps and committing to the lifestyle change is your best chance at improving your health. Best of luck to us all. May we all stay the course and remember that the path to success is never a straight line but rather a consistent path towards the goal.
