Why do I have back pain when I stand with fatty liver/

When I stand (sometimes sitting) I get a really painful back. I have been diagnosed with fatty liver. Either lying down or sitting on a lounge will help the pain significantly. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Much appreciated any thoughts you might have.

Pain is a funny thing as it isn't always where you think it should be. The nerves that are in the Glissom Capsule, the tough sheath that covers the liver come from the spine so it is possible to perceive stress on that nerve in the back but it would be uncommon. A more likely source would be nerves and muscles associated with the spine. However, there is no way we could actually tell you much as diagnosis requires a doctor.

I can’t offer an explanation but wondering if you pain increases or decreases with either meals or activity. My back pain does both.

No I've read that this is quite common with fatty liver, but no, meals don't seem to affect me. Only being on my feet and occasionally sitting in my office chair, which makes it sound as though it is completely unrelated? Thanks for answering.

Actually back pain while sitting in office chair is a clue that my liver is inflamed for me. I actually bought lumbar support pads and a specialized chair before I figured it out. But I I have NASH. I wish it was just a fatty liver.

You need to see your doctor and get it checked out. It could be a lot of things. Fatty liver is just one. I get pain but it is mild and usually aches and usually after I eat too much.

Hi, I also have pain in the back from time to time, which is accompanied by a sensation of discomfort. I attribute this to the swelling (inflammation) of my liver when I haven't eaten clean enough or when I'm tired. But I don't know much more since it doesn't appear like my doctor take my NASH seriously. He just said it appeared (on the ECG) to be severe and to try to lose some weight and that's it. I think it's often what doctors do, here in Quebec: they don't investigate much unless you're in such a condition they don't have any choice. I don't have any numbers to refer to as for the stage of NASH or anything else. But a couple months ago, I was in so much pain, I thought my whole body was giving up on me. Scary. But then again, I feel alone in this and I also feel guilty sometime.

Since you are on this forum, you are well aware that the doctor’s attitude is what many of us also experience.

Yes I can see that so many people suffer after eating. Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don't. Interesting to read that it can happen after eating too much. Thanks for your reply.

It seems doctors don't understand enough about it, and basically just say "its not serious"! Which is what mine has said! I will be asking for a referral to a specialist having read more about it. Also I am seeing holistic doctor who I'm hoping will shed more light re diet etc. Thanks for your response.

Recently diagnosed went to my acupuncturist and the first thing he told me was to cut what I ate in one meal into thirds and not eat more than 1/3 at a time. This has helped with the exhaustion I was feeling after eating and also the back and side pain.
