How much protein should I have?

Hi everyone,

I have been reading about how many of you are going to a plant based diet with little meat and protein coming from legumes mainly with some chicken and fish.

In addition to being diagnosed with NASH between stage 3 and 4 but compensating well, diabetes, and obesity I have now developed Gastroparesis and am on a liquid diet. I have been living on protein shakes that are milk based due to the fact that I can’t do soy. The shake has 30 grams of protein, 4 carbs with only one gram of sugar, and 160 calories. I was loosing weight but have reached a plateau, I can’t seem to break. Exercise is a challenge for me in that I need a hip replacement but have no time off at work and I have used up my FMLA until December. Since diagnosed in February I have gone from a size 24 to a size 18. My BMI is finally under 40. That is a really big thing for me.

I am wondering if I am actually getting to much protein versus calories. I drink 2 to 3 protein shakes a day and may have applesauce or make a fruit smoothie with banana, kiwi and juice of one lemon. Plus I take a multiple vitamin for women over 50. I am 64 and this diagnosis caught me off guard.

I know that I need more veggies in my diet but at this point it hard. Have any of you tried the Naked brand green juice and if so how does it taste? I do have a juicer but I have not drug it out to use. I am finally meeting with a dietician in two weeks to get her suggestions.

Do any of you have any thoughts?

Thanks,

Suzie1955

Good luck to you Susie. I don’t know specifically how much protein we should have either. I was told that whey protein & also collagen protein is good for me to use (with NASH stage 3 fibrosis), and I often use them instead of breakfast or instead of lunch. I gave up milk after the diagnosis and I use unsweetened plain or vanilla almond milk instead which is a much lower calorie alternative to milk too. I sometimes use coconut water instead of the almond milk. I usually add 1/2 to a whole banana, some frozen wild blueberries, & either ground flaxseed or flaxseed oil to my protein shake.

Our site administrator, Nash2, is very knowledgeable and he may know more about the protein requirements.

I agree about the ready made shakes. I don’t use them either. I buy the unsweetened whey protein powder and mix with unsweetened almond milk, fresh banana, frozen wild blueberries, flaxseed or flaxseed oil. The fruit gives the protein shake enough sweetness.

My doctor told me no more than 9 grams of protein per day. You may want to check with your doctor. If you making shakes use fresh vegetables and fruits. Don’t use the frozen ones they are higher in sugar. I use no salt on foods. Eat turkey bacon instead of real pig bacon. Gonna try ground turkey instead of beef. No alcohol. Good luck. It’s a lifestyle change. Do it and you’ll feel better. Believe me I’ve lost 30+ lbs and walk 3 miles a day. I’m 59 this year and feel 35 again. Good luck to you!

It is good you are talking to a nutritionist. That should help you answer your protein question

Hi Suzie and congratulations on your weight loss. I encourage you to get your juicer out and start juicing fresh, organic, greens, with garlic, ginger, etc. I don't think protein shakes are healthy. Anything laden with sugar will spike insulin, which sabbotages your goals.

Check out HIPPOCRATES Health Institute website and watch Dr. Berg, Dr. Mercola, Dr. Jason Gung YouTube videos. Getting healthy is an exciting hobby!!.

I am your age so I encourage you to be patient and persistent.

There is a product I highly recommend instead of protein shakes.

LIVER CLEAR

from Beck Natural Medicine

If you go into her website store you can search for it and read the ingredients.

She also does telephone consultations.

Unfortunately she does not accept insurance.

Well, those are my "go to" suggestions. I hope you feel better soon.

Best wishes
