What symptoms are most troubling to you?

Hope everyone had a lovely weekend, especially those seeing the glorious sunshine in the UK!

Now back to the hard work...How do your symptoms impact your day to day life? Are you even experiencing any symptoms specific to your fatty liver or NASH?

Having multiple complex pathologies, it is very difficult to state specifically which symptoms belong to which illness. Polypharmacy further complicates the situation as many medications result in undesired side effects.

At the moment, my conditions are all fairly stable but one major symptom remains prominent and that is abdominal bloating. I look like a pregnant elephant. I have tried cutting out gluten, to no avail.

When my liver was massive ( now it is just big), my diaghram was pushed up due to bloating and my breathing was more difficult. I was facially plethoric, like a beetroot and was so tired, I couldn't keep my jaundiced eyes open. I also had poor concentration and cognition levels.

No not really i bloat at times but i am not sure that being the cause

and i was stage 3 high end and was down to mid one's using Fibroscan -BUT i expect it to come up because of lack of the exercise i am not getting now because of problems stemming from the APS and other contributing conditions .

Tiredness and hair loss

That's interesting, my hair fell out too but I thought it was my hypothyroidism

My hair has started to thin as well :( Gp thinks it is a diffency of some kind! having blood tests! I am always amemic, I know that can cause hair thinning! they can"t seem to get amemia stable! Didn"t know Liver diease could cause it as well.

With NASH, I had blood with too much iron which made it thick. We discussed periodic blood letting to reduce it but it wasn't sevdre enough to warrant it. Although exhausted most of the time, it was not due to anemia.

Why are you losing your hair??

I don’t know and neither does the dr, who is not really interested anyway

Check out Medscape, there’s a lot of new and interesting research happening. Maybe some Dr‘s will sit up and take notice?

My hair is falling out by the handful, I'm always tired and now my teeth are beginning to break as most of them are crowns, I have hiatal hernia causing the acid reflux that also is bad on my teeth. I thought my hair falling out was side effect of Clinical Trial Medicine but I'm seeing here it must be coming from NASH/Cirrohos. Thanks For Sharing.

Do you sleep on your left side? That way your stomach is not able to get through the valve into your throat.

I lost hair by the fist full! Everyone just said it's my age (62) or due to anything but my NASH. It really stinks@

For me the ongoing issue is discomfort and at times outright pain when I discover another food I can't tolerate. Leaning forward is the only way to ease it at times.

I can't specifically put other symptoms down to the NASH cirrhosis because of other health issues

2349 profile image
2349 in reply to mrsmerlin

How long have you had Nash?

mrsmerlin profile image
mrsmerlin in reply to 2349

Diagnosed with NAFLD 2023/14 and NASH end of 2015

Now diagnosed decompensated NADH/cirrhosis but I don't think the change in title changes much others to scare the family. I came to peace with things long ago

Moonsts profile image
Moonsts in reply to mrsmerlin

I have severe diverticulosis and ibs-d. Also pain urq. I cant tell when it if it's my liver.

A recent cat scan said mild signs of cirrhosis. I have no idea what this means to me. Is it new? My dr isn't clear on many things. And is hard to reach when I need him.

I also have or had at the start NASH with stage 2 fibrosis.

I have multiple health issues, so it is difficult to know what symptoms are caused by what condition. I wasn't aware of any specific symptoms, the fatty liver was discovered during a routine blood test

Sallywolf profile image
Sallywolf in reply to Maladjusted

you're lucky, I've had symptoms since I was about 10 years old, but nothing came up on bloodwork aside from 1 elevated enzyme and low cholesterol. The doctors didn't think anything of it even though I linked my periods of worse fatigue with the times my enzyme was elevated. When nothing showed on the ultrasound they refused to look any further. I had to hound them for 2 decades to get anything more and after a biopsy it was confirmed I am stage 3. That was 2 years ago and they have made no effort to treat me or check if I've reached cirrhosis

I have hemocrematosis which is too much iron in my liver along with NASH diagnosis. Lowered my iron to normal range now working on NASH. Lost weight going to doctor's for checkup.

I have never experienced any symptoms of nafld as far as I know. Acute anxiety on diagnosis, but confidence in managing the condition reversed that .

angelatonew profile image

Very few since I have changed my nutrition/lifestyle. I do occasionally have pain in the right upper epi gastric region (liver) but most of the discomfort (stretching and distention) have improved enormously - thank God!

My last scan revealed no fat in my liver - though my LFT's still show some abnormality.

mauschen profile image
mauschen in reply to angelatonew

I didn't have pain as such howevr, a popping effect was very uncomfortable. I don't have it now.

Is it possible for the fatty condition to disappear?

in reply to mauschen

Hi, there is lots of research showing that the amount of fat in your liver causing NAFLD or NASH can definitely be brought down and even normalized if you eat the right type and right amount of foods, and even more importantly that you are active and moving around, ideally every hour or so.

A recent report really emphasized that being physically fit is more important than actual weight loss, so things that build muscle like walking, running, using an excercise bike, or a treadmill (ideally every day) are really important.

If the NAFLD or NASH has led to liver fibrosis or scarring it is currently a challenge to reverse this damage, it's a bit like scar tissue on your skin. So in that case the most important thing is to keep fit and avoid things that could worsen the situation or cause more damage, such as alcohol, or anything else that puts a burden on your liver. The good news is that treatments for liver fibrosis are being researched.

Granny56 profile image
Granny56 in reply to

Can you give us some idea what these treatments might be and how soon they might be available

mauschen profile image
mauschen in reply to

I am tea total and walk a minimum of 10,000 steps a day ( albeit slowly). I attend a doctor supervised gymnastics class weekly and eat a healthy diet ( small portions) with the odd chocolate biscuit.

My problem is that no one believes me because I am fat. Hypothyroidism is an issue but my endocrinologist can see from my Hba1c that I do not exceed a healthy carbohydrate intake. A lactose intollerance prevents me from eating dairy, and to be honest, there is very little fat in my diet. One dictor tells me to increase my red meat intake due to chronic iron deficiency anaemia while another tells me to reduce my intake because blood results indicate that this is a problem.

Holistic care is the answer. People are entitled to be given information on their individual liver disease status and how this can be handled.

Only one specialist should lead the care in complex cases and patients should be given constructive not assumptive or judgemental care. In the long run this method could be cost effective and beneficial for patients and doctors alike, meaning everyone could be a winner.

No one appears to know or even stab a guess at a scientific explanation, that’s why it is important for us to report this symptom to our doctors.

Hope this lovely weather is helping you to feel better but stay out of the strong sun’s rays. Take care!

What kind of foods have you been eating to turn this around, supplements?

JoyHazel profile image

My symptoms have been tenderness around my liver, extremely tired, and water retention at my ankles if I don't walk everyday. I have developed hyperglycemic (within the last 6 months) since diagnosed a year ago. Very low fat content in the liver from biopsy. Follow good eating habits and exercise helps immensely.

I am always uncomforable in my right side & I get awful pain most of the time after I eat! I also have consipation most of the time! also I am so tried all the time! feel like I could sleep forever! I could have a good nights sleep (rare for me) & still feel so weak & tired! no energy at all :(

bkarks profile image
bkarks in reply to Abby14

I share much of what you wrote...plus digestive issues. I was having skin issues that are clearing up since eating changes also. Also foggy thinking. I knew I was having problems but didn't know why. I feel so much better. I've changed to a strict diet that eliminates processed foods, cuts way back on sugars starches and carbs. No soda...lots of veggies. Am doing more walking and exercising..still feel tired easily but there are times of energy mixed in now....

Jobreeze77 profile image

I think fatigue it a common symptom for most of us. It is important to ensure that you regulate your toilet habits to ensure that being bunged up is not contributing to your symptoms.

Do you think BCAA branch change amino acid could help you? Also you need oil in your diet. Extra virgin olive oil.

nash2 profile image
nash2Partner in reply to 3331

BCAA is probably helpful for anyone suffering from protein digestion problems, a typical issue with cirrhosis. The recommended dose is 4 grams per day.

RainydaySuperstar profile image
RainydaySuperstar in reply to nash2

BCAA? what is it? i never even heard of it

nash2 profile image
nash2Partner in reply to RainydaySuperstar

It is just predigested protein. It means branched chain amino acids and it is what body builders use when they are trying to bulk up.

nash2 profile image
nash2Partner in reply to 3331

Here is a link to information about olive oil. Very important as a dietary fat for liver patients.

Riggsy1 profile image

Oy. Due to numerous issues with other illnesses it is hard to say which are from the nafld. Exhaustion, fibrofog, heavy legs, bloated stomach, mood swings, and deep purple bruises that pop up on belly and take weeks to go away. I get out of bed everyday and i keep busy all day walk dogs 3x a day, completing chores, up and downstairs, cooking and cleaning. I push myself hard and at the end of day i collapse. Frustrated and angry that weight goes up and down 5 lbs up 7 lbs down. Yoyoing out of control. Somedays i would like to just curl up in a.ball and stay in bed, but i keep going.
