Supplements for fasting

Hi, all...

I suggest that you do not try fasting for more than 16 hours initially... and transition into longer fasts and/or talk to your doctor. See:

healthunlocked.com/fasting-...

I have just completed another 68-hour fast. For the conversation about the last one, See:

healthunlocked.com/fasting-...

They say that salt (or "electrolytes") are important... so I took a heaped teaspoon of pink Himalayan salt with my green tea each both mornings of the fast. I think it was Dr Jason Fung that said that if you need salt, salt water tastes delicious... and the tea tasted OK... but salt retains fluid, and it gave me a distended abdomen. We need more salt in hot weather - and it was over 30 centigrade here yesterday. I had a slightly higher pulse - rate - I do not know if that was the salt or the heat.

I also took a mineral and vitamin supplement, and Natures Plus Keto Sugar Control, which contains Berberine, which is supposed to help one get into ketosis.

These come to over £50 for a month's supply - so I will only take them when I am fasting.

I am planning to do a longer fast next month... and I will do it when I have to have a no-fibre diet for a colonoscopy.

This amazing, a 68 hour fast almost sounds impossible for me right now I’ve started on a 20 hour one. I’d rather not take supplements but with a 68 hour one I’m sure you would have to for energy. Well done.

Hi, Michellebee ... Welcome to Fasting and Furious.

If you got trapped somewhere and could drink but not eat for a week - you would probably be OK, and Dr Jasom Fung puts some of his Diabetes patients on an initial 14 day fast... but most of us have to transition into "fat burning mode" for a few weeks before fasting 20:4.

Fasting energy has to come from your fat reserves - and most of us cannot initially get enough.

Intermittent Fasting is supposed to work without too much masochism - do not be too hard on yourself.

Hi thank you for your input. At the moment I’m not very mobile I can’t walk far due to a trapped nerve in my back. My operation is next month so won’t be properly walking about for 6 weeks. Do you think it’s still possible for me to lose weight fasting while not being mobile?

Yes - I lost a pound a week when I was disabled.

Many members on Weight loss lost weight without exercise ...even without IF.

I hope your operation goes OK.

Did you see an Osteopath?

Hopefully I can lose a pound a week. No I haven’t seen an osteopath, I will be going back to physiotherapy after my operation, this is my second operation, I had one last year too for the nerve below this one. I’ve been off my feet since October 2017 I’m hoping after this operation I can get my health back both physical and mental.

Hey well done S11m, this sounds amazing to me 68 hours and you're right its very important to have sufficient electrolytes and to keep hydrated. Have you come across Camu powder? its a very bitter berry like a cherry but 1 tea spoon (5g) contains 7x our RDA of vitamin C so is a great supplement.

I know that you know what you are doing but if any other member wants to fast for more than 24 hours I would get medical/expert guidance first. So it will be interesting to hear how you get on next month.

Yes, Hidden ...I keep telling people that they need to transition into "fat burning mode".

I have done 72+ hour fasts quite a few times over the years and quite frankly I didn’t really worry about supplementation. Most of my longer fasts were before the current fasting fad and there weren’t 20 different doctors with 20 different opinions on how to do it. I can tell you this - once I got past the first 36 hours I felt AMAZING!

Hi, Jafib Welcome.

I did not worry about supplements - I thought that, for under two pounds a day, why not?

I did not feel as good this time - perhaps that was because of the heat.

I too have had AF, Cardioversions, and Catheter Ablations.

Good doctors know that they do not know everything.

Why did you fast?

Health/weight loss

Very interesting as I currently say to myself I’m in my infancy at this time as it’s 3months since I have been practicing IF.I have progressed so far to 24Hrs as of today for the first time. “The maximum. Level of salt recommended by experts is 2,300milligrams but this research concluded that the right level for sodium for most people is between 2,500 and 6,000milligrams per day

and that the constant push to lower sodium may decrease plasma apolipoprotien B10 “This lipoprotein is associated with coronary heart disease even more than LDL”This conversation goes on and on much much more and leads to specialist treatment ie one,s GP....

Hi Hidden

I continue to have plenty of salt with everything, and I take half a level teaspoonful of Pink Himalayan Salt in my green tea every morning - and about a heaped teaspoon when I am fasting.

I have just completed a five-day fast.
