Cognitive assessment

Hi all, my daughter aged 81/2 is having a cognitive assessment next week as her paediatrician would like to see how her profile presents, as she thinks it would be 'spikey' just wondering if anyone has any experience of theses and what it entails. Thanks :)

Hello again

No, we've not had cognitive assessments for either child, as yet.

Interestingly, the last time we were with the paediatrician the conversation was around this same topic. Our Paediatrician wants cognitive assessment for our AD in particular. I think it will be fascinating.

We've struggled to get school to understand the complexity of her learning and the inconsistent understanding she demonstrates.

Please do let us all know how the assessment goes!

Spiky is what you often hear in relation to this kids, good/age appropriate at some stuff and immature at others. \our friends' 16 year old is having a party for her birthday with loads of teenagers and "pop" music but is asking as a present for a Barbie doll!!!

Yes sounds very much like our daughter (9 in 4 months) will the cognitive assessment pick this sort of thing up do you think?

What does a "spikey" profile mean?

Hi all. A spikey profile means that in the areas assessed if plotted on a chart the line would be spikey (or zig zagged). Meaning in one area the child was around average for age, another area was below average and another area above average. This is very typical with FASD affected children.

My FASD daughter (just 10) has had a couple of these. We took the Vineland assessment 2/3 years ago and another a couple of months ago (can't remember which one). Both entailed answering many many question re cognitive abilities relating to age. We find it useful as the outcome was the areas where our daughter is operating as a 2-3 year old - a useful reminder in how best to communicate with her and reminding us it's can't rather than won't.

Good luck
