I have a son with autism/FASD diagnosis. Daily struggle all the time. I'm looking to connect with other parents or even people with a FAS diagnosis. My sons #1 thing is lack of motivation!

Hi - feel for you. It's a long hard road and it is relentless. I feel like I am pushing my son up a hill every day and if I turn around to look at anything else he falls back down - so often feels like we go backwards instead of forwards.

Forgets what you think he has learnt - even down to washing his face every day - needs constant reminders and supervision. Its like carrying a sack of potatoes around sometimes - well a lot actually.

When you say motivation - what exactly do you man - for anything or most things or some things? If processing is slow (as it is in my son) getting to grips with doing anything is a painfully slow thing and he often forgets before he has started what he is supposed to be doing.

We are having some success with medication recently as I saw a webinar about FASD kids often having ADD (rather than ADHD) its much harder to spot but is an inability to focus on task and gets distracted in busy/loud/stressful environments.

Hi

I would suggest joining one of the FASD trust groups for support. These are great to sound off for parents and gain valuable advice.

Hi there,

I am the National FASD Link Coordinator for the FASD Trust. Please contact me at familysupport@fasdtrust.co.uk and I can give you details of your nearest FASD Link Group. Link groups provide support to those affected by FASD. The groups meet quarterly on Saturdays and we provide guidance and advice, support , refreshments and children's activities. Also, lots of support from other parents/carers who can relate very easily to your experiences!

Link Group Host Training

If there isn't a support group close to you, we can also offer training and support in helping you to set up a FASD Link group. Our next Link Group Host training event is on 29th April and held in Merseyside.

Also, and just to respond to your query, lack of motivation stems from executive functioning difficulties, primarily 'task initiation'. If you contact me, I will send you a handout about this and direct you to other resources to help you out with practical parenting tips.

Thanks

Diane
