Hi,

I an suffering with a Facial Palsy after having a cholesteatoma in my right ear. I had lost my hearing in the ear but developed the facial palsy 18 months after the second operation. The palsy literally happened over night, and it has left me with an eye that does not close and a distinctive drop on the right side of my mouth. I have had one operation to try and correct the eye but it failed I am waiting to have another one soon. My consultant does not seem interested in helping me with my mouth problem, in fact he seems embarrassed about it, as he knows this situation is down to neglect by his team, so I am looking to have it done privately.

This situation could have been avoided if the cholesteatoma had been discovered earlier, all the symptoms were there but only a MR scan picked it up and that was paid by the family. I would advise anyone who notices a child who talks through the side of their mouth and suffers from ear problems to seek help ASAP, as these are the problems I had which lead to having one of the worst choleteatoma's my consultant have ever seen.
