2 year old constipation

Hi, new member here.

My 2 year old daughter has been struggling with constipation for a while and has been recently officially diagnosed with the dr.. her constipation comes out in the form of diarrhoea, where she gets the impaction and then it causes her to have a lot of foul smelling bad diarrhoea, she has recently started movicol, but we are still trying to figure out the right dosing for her because she’s been on it for about a week and so far it seems to

Make her diarrhoea more, the dr is not concerned and says to keep going with it. She has a well rounded diet and never seems poorly or overly bothered about it, but I’m just trying to figure it all out.

Any advice helpful!

Thanks.

Have you considered enemas

It sounds like she is backed up and you need to disimpact her.

Hi Lisa, unfortunately this is normal. My daughter has chronic constipation for 14 months now and takes laxido sachets 8 per day her Pooh is literally water all the time but the drs won’t let me bring her sachets down. It sounds like your child needs disimpaction if they have overflow leaking the dr should have advised if this was the case though? Usually that involves gradually going up to 8 sachets a day until the Pooh is like rusty water staying there for 3 days then gradually reducing the dosage back down again to a maintenance dosage like 2 sachets a day. I would also keep them at home when you get to 5 sachets as they will soil and need the toilet a lot and probably be a little uncomfortable. I hope it goes well for you x

Oh ok thanks, he didn’t say too much about going up the sachets, he said because she’s small she should have one sachet a day split into two dosages and then I could go up and down as I needed if she wasnt going one day, up to four sachets but said it was in likely she would need that. He felt her stomach and said it was nice and soft but he could hear a lot of gurgling etc which means there is something going on with the bowel etc. The movicol makes her go, but it’s only really been like mud I would say and dr never said anything about watery poop, he just said to keep her on a dose to keep her pooping and to not worry too much about achieving a ‘solid’ poo. He said it was a bit like her having an once burg in her stomach and we’re trying to dissolve it away and then keep her on the dosage the ice burg doesn’t come back 🤦‍♀️ 🤷‍♀️

Oh that’s good then and if stomach is nice and soft I wouldn’t worry too much. My daughters was like a rock and distended so could clearly see she was quite badly constipated. I would say your never going to get a “normal” Pooh whilst on sachets but that’s just from my experience the last year it’s always going to be a bit softer/runnier than usual because that’s what the sachets do to help them go.hopefully your daughter isn’t on them for too long x

Oh bless her, it must be so horrid for them, feeling so rubbish and not being able to say or do much about it! Fingers crossed, am hoping it’s just a little bit of help for her atm and she might grow out of it a bit.

I hope your little one is doing well.

Thank you

Hi Lissa27692,my son 2.7yrs had same issue.feacal impactation. He's been constipated for the longest time I tried all i could and earlier Drs been saying its normal to be constipated for toddlers.finally one Dr decided to put us on treatment plan. Been on it since mid Dec and first it was 2,2,4,4,6,6,8,8 sachets to remove blockage(impactation).. N stool was pretty much diarrhoea. Then spoke to doc and now giving him upto a max of 4 depending on how his stool is. It's like helping them to reset bowel movement and aim is to have at least one normal movement that is complete each day. Some days he has 2, some 1 some 3 some even get to 4 depending on if i see any constipated tendencies or if previous day he did not have movement so i increase does next day. We using Laxido which has same ingredients as Movicol. And trying my best to ensure he gets enough water, fibre, fruit and veg in a day. It's a journey. We'll be on this until next dr appointment early March. We can support each other through this..I know how frustrating it gets when u see them struggle to poop. Now it's much better.though potty training is not going so well. Hope this helps.

Thank you, that is really helpful. At the moment she is only having one sachet a day but I think we will need to increase it like you’ve said. And that’s it’s I’m so worried about potty training! How is she supposed to deal with that with the diarrhoea? Poor little ones x
