Hi I'm looking for advice please. My 3 year old won't poo. She was on laxido we have weaned her off it over lockdown and she was going regularly then the last two weeks she's just stopped. We went 5 days last week and are on day 5 again this week. She has plenty of fruit and fibre and eats prunes every day. We are getting to the end of our tether and don't know what to do
Child withholding poo: Hi I'm looking for advice please... - ERIC
You need to re-introduce movicol immediately and this time don’t wean her off. She needs to stay on it.
She maybe needs to have a maintenance dose for longer.
May I ask how many sachets she was on before you weaned her off?
I find what ever level keeps her regular after disimpaction but gives her a chance to build back the muscles is probably about right.
If you’re not careful you may have to disimpact and start all over again. I did the same the first time...
how long it took for your little one to stay on laxative and how long it took to get back on normal track after laxative treatment?
We’ve done 3 disimpactions since Christmas ( I don’t think I went far enough the first time and it just made it worse).
The last disimpaction we stayed on the maximum dose for nearly a week and then reduced it by a sachet weekly.
But she’s still on 2 sachets... And only has one or two accidents a week now due to not being able to feel it so we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I doubt she’ll be back to normal for at least 6 months. We have her on a toilet routine and I intend to put some kind of care plan in place for when she starts school in September just in case.
are you prescribed PEG?if PEG, then 2 sachet meaning how many grams?
Not sure what PEG is but she has Laxido.
PEG is one of the ingredients in laxido.how many grams are there in a single sachet
I would suggest that if you are aiming to reduce the laxative, if 2 days pass without a bowel movement, I would intervene with inceeased to ensure no chronic constipation occurs.
I read that once they are going regularly, they need to stay on a maintenance dose for as long as they have been witholding, in order to learn not to be fearful if pooing, as this is usually a key reason for witholding. It's really so challenging isnt it
I agree with the below comments. It might be something she has to stay on for quite some time. My son was the same he would hold it for days sometimes going on to day 7 which would then result in a pain increasing his fear and the size of them would be something out of a horror film lol. We are now in a regular pattern of movicol juice every other day and he goes fairly regularly. It's still a bit of a battle to get him to try but it's much much easier. Don't worry about staying on the movicol for a long time I asked my doctor and there are no issues with that some kids are on it for years until they get used to going without support. Like you we were doing lots of fruit fibre etc but if they are holding it in that much it doesn't make a difference as they are extremely backed up. Keep a diary of how much dosage you give her and when she goes and then it becomes easier to find the right balance that works for her and you. Like I say one every other day works for us..they're are no accidents and he goes at least every other day now as appose to the 7 days he used to. Good luck xx
you didn't mention for how many days/months she was on laxative ? its suggested to give laxative for continuous 6 months before trying to wear them off
Thanks everyone, she's been on it over two years but just one sachet a day
Would you please let me know about your Laxido journey ? I have two out of my 3 kids on it. Both for stool withholding. Thank you
