Movicol dose help please?

Hi I need advice please! My daughter is almost 2 and a half and is currently on laxido\movicol. We are struggling hugely with the dose :( she is currently having up to 10 BMs a day which are not normal. The doctors aren’t really giving any advise at all. Do I need to up the dose? When I seem to do this she’s gets chronic diarrhoea, we are at our witts end and any advice would be great. We are unable to potty train as it’s just unpredictable what her bms will be like and I don’t want to cause her anymore stress :(

Have you disimpacted? You increase the dose daily until you get to 12 sachets a day and then come back down. I'm not sure about disimpacting a young child. The ERIC website night be able to help you with that.

Movicol softens the poo making it easier to push out. It also stimulates but only slightly. Take a look on the ERIC website. Also look for the Movicol Mummies group on Facebook. Lots and lots of parents going through this too.

Thank you so much for replying. Yes she has, but then gets bunged up again, we can never seem to get the dose correct and the doctors aren’t much help :( they have never really told me what to do so we have just gone with it. Although we will be booking an appointment tomorrow as we can’t take much more. I will take a look at the group and ERIC thank you so much!

I agree with Popping toilet/potty sits need to be planned in too.

We've been through this for five and a half years now with my youngest. I really feel passionate about incontinence as it's not a well supported condition in the NHS. People don't realise how frustrating and stressful it is for the whole family not just the child. It's a taboo subject but I'll talk about it all day especially after what we've been through.

Good luck. There's plenty of support out there through ERIC, Facebook groups etc. Don't suffer in silence as you're definitely not alone. Xx

Thank you so much, even just writing on here has made me feel better. So draining and straining on us all and I feel like all we do is talk about the number two 😂. Will do some more research and be back thank you x

Hiya. My daughter is 3 and I have just done disimpaction and now down to 3 sachets a day of Movicol and so far is is working and she is doing a bowel movement on the potty. Defo read the disimpaction info on the Eric website as different dose for different ages. I think up to 8 sachets up to 5yr olds. Then have to come back to a maintenance dose?

Been doing Toilet Time too which she has loved. Do three times a day after a meal (about 20mins after) and I sit her there for 5 mins with a shoe box full of random little toys and she plays with that. Only allowed when doing toilet time otherwise loses effect. Really work. Once five mins up then put box away. She does normal wees in toilet in between but not called toilet time.

Hope that helps as has worked a treat for us so far.

Thank you! This is really helpful, will look at the info on Eric. Cannot tell you how much better I feel just for writing on here and knowing others are in the same boat. I just feel for her so much and know it’s starting to effect her x

Hi sorry I am going to disimpact but once I have reached the max dose and I need to go back to maintenance dose do I just jump from 8-3 or do I go 8,7,6....reading we haven’t done it properly before and want to get it right this time. I’m going to book next week off of work will that be enough time if I start the process on say Wednesday? Thanks in advance xx

As a guide say if your daughter discompacts on 8 sachets you half it to get the maintenance dose. So it would be 4.

You can drop 2 sachets at a time but when I was getting close to the potential maintenance dose I may reduce it slower. It can take a couple of days for your child to adjust to the new dose. So when I was trying to get the right dose I tried to wait at least 2 to 3 days before i adjusted the dose. Check what her maximum dosage is I'm pretty sure it is 8 for her age. Also on some children altering it by a teaspoon can make a difference.

Place her on a toilet 20 mins after meals. This is the time they are most likely to go and it starts training the brain to talk to the bum. If you can get her to sit for 10 mins each time but you need to be consistent. Use books, bubbles tablets to keep her entertained. When my son was bad we had to keep him there for 20 mins.

Keep a poo log, see Eric. Comes in handy for you to understand where you are with the medicines and helps you work out if you need to increase or decrease. Also helps with the medical profession.

Sorry for the essay. I know how you feel. But there is Hope!!!
