Hi so about a month ago i wrote about my 5 year old withholding. I did a dissipation of her with movical, and with the maintenance dose of 3 sachets a day she was still withholding. It has been almost 3 weeks since she had last gone and I am worried that she is impacted again. Dose anyone know what to do,I am worried that she could keep on getting impacted and this could be a cycle.

Hi Anna. Movicol only softens the poo, you probably need to add a stimulant. Senna is usually prescribed. We use tablets, others take it in liquid form. If the correct dose is given, it creates peristalsis, and the contractions should be strong enough to overcome the witholding behaviour. It doesn’t work if the poo is impacted though. And as I often mention in my posts, if that doesn’t work, consider enemas. But always ensure you soften the poo first.

And is there ever blood in the poo? Holding poo in for so long dries it out, in the rectum and the rest of the colon, that can result in a tear...

Yes there can be blood in the poo,the GP said it was from a tear. Also I am going to try senna.

How did the disimpaction go, after all? How long did it take, did a lot of poo come out and did it get to clear water in the end? Have you only used Movicol? Have you seen anyone else except the GP in regards to this?

Also, if your little one is not potty trained, does she poo in a nappy or how else? Will she refuse to sit on a potty?

She pooped a decant but not a lot for not going for 4 weeks. She filled up 1 diaper and thats it. We did not get to clear water. I have only used Movicol and I have only seen the GP.

She will poo in a nappy and if she is not in a nappy she will go in her under pants. She will sit on a potty but she cant feel when she has to go.

Oh, and based on my experience and reading on the matter, reasoning with her about witholding is not going to work. Find some articles online regarding witholding. Once the child starts doing it, it’s very hard to overcome. That’s why, you need to keep the poo soft for a very long time until she stops associating pooping with pain.

It’s the colon’s job to remove water for the fences, so the longer the poo sits inside, the drier it gets!

Did the GP express much concern when you said she didn’t go for 3 weeks?

I would take her to the hospital, so then they would have to deal with this right away. They can do a manual disimpaction under anestethic, they can X-ray to see how badly constipated she is, there’s lots they can do.
