9 year old suffering but I don’t believe its constipation 🤔

*bit of an essay*

My 9 yr old daughter started being poorly around 2 years ago- dramatic weight loss/complete appetite loss/extreme fatigue/bad moods & total loss of confidence, after around a month or so later she began having upto 10 soiling accidents a day!

I didn’t feel like I was getting anywhere with my GP so I took her to A&E, from there she was admitted & given a scan which showed her body was completely impacted (it was all new to me & very confusing when I knew she regularly went to the toilet)

She was given a bowel prep (1 morning & 1 night) and if decided to start working through the night - absolutely heartbreaking to watch ( sat up all night with her screaming in pain)

By lunch time the next day she was cleaned out & we were given a new regime of picosulphate medicine twice daily. After 4/5 weeks my daughter impacted again so the dosage was made higher - 4/5 later she impacted again! Her medication was changed to movicol ( 6 per day) - in the last 18 months I have had to do the dis impaction regime with her around 7 times- resulting in very low attendance in school because of this matter

My daughter is currently on 5 sachets a day, goes to the toilet as normal but is having real bad flares ups of diaorreah/sickness/sore throats/ bad back ache & sometimes fever

She cannot have a bath due to her having a soiling incident in there every time & when she showers she has very bad soiling accidents in there ( if resembles cow dung) and this is happening pretty much every night!

Has anybody else’s child suffered from feacal impaction to this extent but then something has been diagnosed which could be causing this problem??

Any advice would be gratefully received

Thank you

1 very exhausted & worn out mum 😊

My son is in very very similar situation. We are now trying private chiropractor who is amazing and I am praying it will help as things are pretty desperate now. He also has osteopath treatments and trying a hypnotherapist next week. His worst symptom is severe pain but he also soils exactly same as yours and has vomited loads and relaxed and generally seems pretty unwell.

The chiropractor has explained it all goes back to his birth (he also suffered severe colic for the first year) and she’s confident she can get his system working again. I promise you if he does a poo in the next few weeks I will be posting about it on here with the process we have been through in detail as it will be nothing short of miraculous. Stay in touch if you like as your daughter’s symptoms sound so similar to my sons and they are exactly the same age. Although the pain he experiences is absolutely unreal 😖

Well I took my son to his first chiropractor appointment this week. They have said they may be able to help us. At my appointment it was suggested we perhaps go to a nutritionist that is a functional medicine practioner as they thought it may help. I'm considering giving this ago. I thought I would put this out there because I didn't know these people existed.

We went to private nutritionist a while ago. I think we have been lucky with our chiropractor as she is suggesting things for him to take as supplements (I am doing 3 hour round trip drive to get to her weekly after working all day) but my son says he doesn’t mind!! He says she is the best one at taking the pain away. He actually did some poo in the loo tonight after a treatment last night....hopefully we are on our way to a miracle!!

gosh i'm so sorry for you & your child, its heart breaking to read. what tests has she had done to date to exclude other conditions? when was she last tested for coeliac disease & have other auto-immune conditions been excluded? coeliac can be tricky to diagnose as it might take more than 1 test to show a positive result & can develop at any age. Both chronic constipation & diarrhoea can be a symptom & if u are only trying to relieve the symptoms by using bowel meds you aren't getting to the cause of the problem. Has she been seen by a specialist paediatrician/gastro-enterologist ? If she hasn't I would REALLY push for a referral to the hospital, particularly if prior to age 7 she didn't have any bowel issues, did she toilet train "normally"? I had years of my daughter only doing "cow dung" motions without them willing to consider anything else apart from bowel meds, she finally improved with suppositories (never given a specific diagnosis but she was ill straight after birth & its possibly a issue with her bowel wall....she does respond badly to certain foods but we exclude those so have never gone down specific food testing as we managed to improve things around age 8)but I am a great believer that kids need to be approached as INDIVIDUALS rather than just given standard treatment if things don't improve. Best wishes .
