Advice after disimpaction

We have just finished a disimpaction and now I’m worried as my daughter (11 yrs old) has only done one small poo in 3 days. We went back to one sachet then two.

Do we need more this quickly and do I need to get some Senna? Also can u buy Senna for children without a prescription as it’s the weekend?

Hi you can buy liquid Senna over the counter. Our daughter is nine and recently the consultant told us to give her four sachets of movicol and 10ml of senokot. We have now reduced that to two movicol and 5ml of senokot . Good luck x

I’m worried that if I don’t up things she’ll be back to where she started 😬.

Thank you that does make sense. I suppose I’ve got to try different amounts x x

Hi lovely. It is very much trial and error and as you say you don't want her to go backwards. Has she had this long? We've been going for nearly six years. If you haven't seen it the pooh nurses video is excellent. Loads of drink is essential, even more so this weather.Regular sitting on the toilet is also very necessary. I'm so sorry if you know all this already!!xx

Thank you for your message. It’s been on going for 5 years for us too.

Which poo video do you mean as there are a few?? X x

Well it's the one on the link on the right of this page but if you've been going five years too I'm not sure that it would be particularly relevant as you probably know it all. However much we all know and understand we still can't seem to solve this frustrating issue!!! Xx

After disempaction we did slow reduction of movicol to 3 sachets daily alongside enemas daily then reduced enemas to every 2 days then 3 days then twice a week then just movicol. This took another 2 months following disimpaction and we have to stick to movicol for 6 months before reducing to 1 sachet. This advice came from continence clinic and we’ve had no accidents since Christmas when we did disimpaction for 13 year old

That's brilliant, well done. Lovely to hear such encouraging news. You're right it just has to be done so slowly. I think maturity helps too, things have been so much better since the summer holidays started,it's so much easier to monitor everything. I've also heard the words " I need a poo" never thought that would happen!! X

We were told daily senna was the most important after disimpaction to help the bowel contract back to normal size. We were initially on one movicol but have been able to cut that out totally. For us senna has always been the thing that helps rather than movicol anyway. Good luck

Hi ya. I don't know if this helps. But as a guide whatever your child discompacts on ie 10 sachets of movicol half it and that will give you an idea what the maintenance dose will be. If you need to increase or decrease I tend to do it slowly over a period of time as I find my son's takes two to three days to adjust to the dose rate. Some times I have reduced his rate by a teaspoon at a time.
