Hi all,

My 10 year old daughter has been trying to ISC herself but is really struggling. She says it is really painful and gets really quite distressed. After a while of trying I tell her to stop as it isn’t working and she gets even more upset that she has failed.

Her consultant has suggest an SPC but I just don’t know what to do for the best as that comes with it’s own risks.

I feel completely on my own with this and don’t know who to talk to about it that understands.

Any help / support would be greatly received.

Hi there, we know all about this, it's so difficult for them, my daughter tried to sc for a few weeks but it caused so much distress to her, she suffers with anxiety so this really didn't help matters, my 13 yr old daughter had a spc fitted in June last year, it has had its issues but overall, she has been much happier emptying her bladder as it's the only thing that's worked, the only thing we have had issues with are lots of UTIs which was never an issue before and sore round the site of where the tube goes in, it's sounds worse than it is but my daughter is getting better at having it changed over every three months, she has also had Botox injections and biofeedback training, we are waiting on the next lot to be arranged, it will be a year in June that she's had a spc, although it was only a temporary solution at the time, it seems that this the only thing that works right now as she just can't self catheterise as it was too much for her, done children are different and can manage it but some children it's just too stressful, I really sympthathise with you on this, if you heed any advise or help, I'm here to give you any support or help, good luck xxx

Hi Louise, how are things going now? ISC is difficult for young girls there are a lot of different catheters around to try I know that coloplast have some very discreet ones with really unique lubrication which makes it less painful. They also do samples- I use the Speedo Cath compact Eve and it doesn’t hurt at all. There are also numbing agents you can get to numb the urethra before inserting. Please message me if you like. Hope things are better for her now, ISC must be very daunting for a young girl .
