My 4.5 year old went on oxybutynin for an overactive bladder in July. After about 6 weeks there was a big drop in the number of accidents but not perfect. In September, the continence team advised to double the dose and bar one or two tiny leaks, she's been dry since. (Wahoooo!!!!) Two weeks ago we picked up our next prescription and it was a different brand and the accidents have started up again. Just a couple to begin with but pretty much one a day now. Still nothing compared to where we were before the tablets but a pain. Has anyone else noticed a difference in the efficacy of different brands? The pharmacy said there will be no difference. I'll speak to the continience team next week as it may be she's just grown and we need to increase the dose again but just wondered if anyone had a similar experience.

Can I ask how you got the oxybyutinin? Our daughter is 5 and we'd love her to get some. Her input/output charts show up to 20 wees per day with intervals as low as 30 mins sometimes. She only holds 40-90ml. We've seen continence nurse, Gp ( a million times), paediatrician etc.
Identical situation with output here (though son now 8) and continence nurse wrote a month ago to GP to ask them to prescribe Oxy. What have all these people said when you took your daughter to see them? Wonder if its an age thing? Maybe they don't like prescribing until age 7 onwards - we were told this by a GP. Though NICE guidelines suggest otherwise I think! That GP does not have to wait until 7 if its clear there is a problem. Double check but it might be worth mentioning/printing out for your next visit.
The only other things suggested are TENS, and behaviour management tack - so double wees and get to loo and try to hold for 1 min, then increase after this is stable. Nurse said it was asking impossible for son to do that if bladder overactive. Have you had a diagnosis?
Hi, no diagnosis yet. We've had lots of Gps suggest UTIs but each time they send urine off to the lab and it comes back clear.
They've obviously ruled out constipation. She has a regular sausage poo each day in the toilet.
I think it's an age thing. She saw a paediatrician three times but she seemed to think she would grow out of it, which she isn't doing!
A continence nurse said we are doing all she would advise in terms of amount of drinks etc but didn't look at input output as she said it was outdated by the time we saw her!
The school nurse took a history etc and filled in a form and we are awaiting referral. She requested a new input output which we did ( 4 days).
Our continence nurse wrote to our Gp and requested the prescription. She was a bit unsure about it because she had never prescribed it for a child before (she's 4.5) but happy to follow their lead. We've been on movicol and senakot for about 2 years and they think it was constipation that caused the overactive bladder through a stretched section of bowel and impaction pressing on the bladder causing it to twitch, and now it can't stop. we've done disimpactions etc and they were really happy we had the bowel functioning well. They did an ultrasound on her bladder to confirm she was emptying properly and they basically decided 'let's give it a go and see if helps'. She was weeing c.20 a day too and about 15 accidents at its peak or if we were at home. The nurse described it as a bladder that just can't stop sneezing and the constantness of it means she probably has no idea if she needs to go or not. Now it's working so well they've said she'll probably need to stay on it for 18 months or so and then we can try reducing.
I feel really lucky we've had such a proactive continence team, I can't say I've done anything different to anyone on here, just been lucky about who we've been seen by.
Yes, I think it is a real lottery as to which medical professionals you see, and how well they understand the different possible causes of daytime wetting.
Keep pushing for referral to a paediatric urologist - not just a paediatrician and not just a urologist - if getting no help elsewhere.
