This sounds very similar to my daughter. She's just turned 3 and she began to withhold as all her experiences before we're large pasings and painful. At last I've been taken seriously at the Drs who just kept giving me Laxido to clear her out but this resulted in many runny poos that she couldn't control and we had to go back to nappies. We've been on a twice a day dose of lactulose for over a week which has completely changed the situation. We get daily poos, large but don't hurt her. She's enjoying and learning the new sensation. The longer term is to get her more used to it then reduce the dosage. But she's happy, we are too and life has become better.

My advice would be don't leave it too long else your grand daughter might get fearful of going like my daughter did and you have to crack this mental issue too. Persist with the Drs to see what medicine suits her body at what dose to get her more regular.

Best of luck!

Visit your GP and ask them to check her stomach in case any poo is stuck/impacted in there. If so, they should prescribe movicol (which is a laxitive but all it does is soften the poo, it doesn't get absorbed by the child so is pretty harmless) in quite a large amount to clean her out so to speak (basically give her the runs!).

After that (or straight away if she's not impacted) you keep giving movicol daily for several months (sometimes longer) which keeps the poo soft and comfortable to pass. Her insides should gradually shrink and get back to normal and then the dose is reduced bit by bit. It's a slow process and quite gentle.

It's better to do it young as I understand the younger it's caught the easier to treat.

My daughter has been on it a few months. She had to re-potty-train (she is 2 3/4 now) but does not leak and is happy to poo on the potty. So it works. The movicol just passes right on through as I understand, just softens it all up! So they should prescribe it if you ask.
