Is there a relationship between the two? I have both and I have seen suggestions elsewhere there is an influence on epilepsy from Hypothyroidism

Hi Pezenas, yes there is. Hypothyroidism is low thyroid count and is affected by balance of one's hormones. I am hypothyroid too, and have had epilepsy since the age of 16. My epilepsy started with puberty as well as stress from exams. Both are related from a hormonal point of view.

I don't have hypothyroidism, but I can certainly say that some epilepsy (at least the kind that I have) is hormone related. Mine also arrived with puberty - within a couple of weeks of my first period.

As far as I know, and in my case, I don't believe they are related. My seizures started at 8 months old, my Hypothyroidism didn't start until my 7th grade year in school. Hypothyroidism also runs on my mother's side of our family so I was at risk for it anyway. I also took lots of medications before I was diagnosed with it(including a high dosage of steroids for my kidney disorder I had that went into remission around the same time I was diagnosed, not to mention I also used an inhaler on a daily basis for childhood Asthma, and have recently been taking an inhaler due to medication-induced asthma right now-which the medications in those are also steroids and tend to take a toll on hormones. So I mostly blame medications and just genetics on mine. As for the seizures themselves, I don't believe in the connection between them and an underactive thyroid.
