CBD Oil and seizures

Hi my son is currently going through tests for epilepsy he has had about 5 seizures in about 18 to 20 months and it just the beginning of our journey. loads of people have anecdotally recommended CBD Oil (which is now legal to by in UK ). It is really expensive and I am not going to try anything at the moment as we are still in the early days (im hoping it will stop a suddenly as it started). I just wondered if anyone with epilepsy had experience of using it or could point me toward and useful information on it. This may not be needed but i just want to investigate as all other medication seem to me based on prevention of seizures and not stopping the cause.

Hi DJ01 ,

I have recently started using CBD oil ( about 3 days ago ) I honestly don't feel any difference but I still think it's too early to tell. I'm hoping that eventually it might help because of all the reviews I read about it all seem to be positive. I'm going to give it a month and see.

You can get it in capsules where you put them under your tongue and it dissolves or on the inside of the cheek in liquid form.

I use the vapor as I take it everywhere with me incase I feel a bit funny and have a blackout . I decided to go for this way as I was actually in the shop asking about it when I had a black out.

Sorry it isn't much help but if you decide to go ahead use it please let me know if it helps your son and if I get any positive results from it I will let you know

Thanks, rraditau

Hi Rraditau,

Which CBD oil are you taking? I started it a week ago and can agree with you, no difference for me yet, but it is the very beginning still!

Hi

If your son is diagnosed with epilepsy, the doctor is likely to suggest epilepsy medicine. For 5 out of 10 people being on the right dose of the right epilepsy medicine can control their seizures.

All epilepsy medicines are based on stopping the seizures. Sometimes there is an identifiable cause of epilepsy in the brain. In this situation, if epilepsy medicine hasn’t worked, brain surgery may be suitable. For some people this can remove the cause of their epilepsy.

CBD oil is not yet licensed to be sold as a medicine in the UK. It is possible to get over the internet but there are risks involved including what the exact content might be. Depending on the content, it is possible that it could trigger a seizure as you never know what ingredients it may have been mixed with.

Cannabis is made up of a number of components. We are aware that in the UK research is being done to look at the safety of one component of cannabis called cannabidiol (CBD). We welcome research in to this area: epilepsy.org.uk/about/posit...

We have some more information about this topic in our news section: epilepsy.org.uk/news/news/c...

I do hope this information is useful for you.

Hi DJ01,

I just started with CBD oil about a week ago, so unfortunately I am very new at it and can't tell you much about it! No difference for me yet.. I have read from many people suffering from Epilepsy that it has helped them a lot, when all other epilepsy drugs have failed. My Epileptologist said I should try it and that it can't make things worse, only better! Please notice that my CBD oil doesn't contain any TSH strains, which are the still illegal ones. Would love to hear your update about your decission! Wishing you and your son all the best☺️
