Responsible department: Department for Work and Pensions

Endometriosis is a debilitating illness for thousands of women. Many suffer with extreme chronic or recurring pain, chronic fatigue, digestive problems, fertility problems and many have to undergo multiple surgeries, intense hormonal medication (with many side effects) or find ways of coping or fitting their lives around the intense pain they are subjected to.

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) covers the symptoms of endometriosis such as chronic pain and chronic fatigue, but sufferers of the illness are not covered, and do not have the same rights as other people with disabiling illnesses. Endometriosis is recognised as a disability in many other countries, but not yet in the UK.

Endometriosis should be formally recognised as a disability, and covered under the Disability Discrimination Act.

  • both citizens advice and esa class this illness as a disability but i was turned down because i can walk to my car yet your advised by specialists to walk around to ease symptoms

  • I'd like to forward this petition to all my contacts but can't seem to copy it to paste in an email.

    Any ideas?

  • Thank you so much everyone!!!! xxx Please spread the word.

EJT01 : are you able to click on the link above? I would suggest you do that and then copy and paste from there. Thank you so much for spreading the word xxx

  • linnyloo63 : That's just ridiculous!! I am sure that people with other conditions that are considered "disabilities" have pain free days where they are able to walk to their cars!! The fact that you couldn't walk to your car on the days where you are in excrutiating pain is surely more to the point!! Good to hear that it is slowly being recognised though.

Hope you are not in too much pain today and thankyou for signing. xxx

  • I've signed it and also posted it to my Facebook page. My friends know how much pain I go through with this damn disease so I'm sure more will sign it xxx

  • Just thought I'd share this from the Endometriosis UK website. (I hope this link works) This is the charities position on this and help and advice for sufferers.

    Hope this helps.

  • DONE DONE DONE! Lets make it happen!. xxx

  • Hi Ladies,

I just wanted to take the time and let you know where Endometriosis UK stand with regard to classing endometriosis as a disability.

We have recently released a statement on this subject which you can read here - and hope that this is helpful in clarifying our position.

Thank you and all the best,

  • I've signed :) I work in the legal profession and I am very lucky that my employer recognises that when I have a flare up I am very much debilitated. I hope other people can recognise this and more people sign :)

  • Done xx
