I am booked in next monday to have a decapeptyl injection. I have been told everyone has this before excision and hysterectomy? I have read about side effects of other hormone drugs, but not heard of this one. Any advice would be appreciated.
Decapeptyl, along with Zoladex and Prostap, are part of a group of drugs called LH/RH analogues which control your hormones. They are most commonly known for their use in treating men with low grade prostate cancer but are also useful in treating women with endometriosis. Essentially, it doesn't matter which one you are given, it often comes down to which one your local PCT is prepared to pay for! The only 'differences' relate to the potential side effects and also the way the injection is given (apparently Decapeptyl is a kinder injecton compared to Zoladex! Having had Zoladex myself for nearly six months, it was painfuly and stingy at first, but by about the third one, I had become used to it!) and some practice nurses will offer a local anaesthetic to your belly if required. I personally don't think its needed!
I did have my Zoladex prior to my surgery - my Consultant said that it was worthwhile from the fact that it may give me relief from my symptoms and there is some evidence to suggest it can help to reduce some of the endo tissue which can then improve the outcome of surgery. However, it is possible to have this hormone treatment and not proceed to surgery. I too was diagnosed with stage 4 endo (recto-vaginal) and opting for a radical hysterectomy plus removal of my ovaries was the best decision for me in my situation. However, it isn't for everyone.
Hope this answers your question! Sorry its a bit long winded!
i had decapeptyl without the surgery n found it awful the side effects were worse than the endo n tht really is saying something!!! made me constantly achey n i was sick all the the time even wen i was driving down the motorway which was quite scary some days i had no energy whatsoever n couldnt even get out of bed n i put 4 stone on in 3 months which wasnt bad to say that i was throwin most of my food up :S i refused the 2nd injection which was booked in for 3 months after the first and refused all drugs except painkillers n a year n half later im 5 months pregnant! it all depends on ur body it may be able to handle it better than mine but forewarnd is forearmed n its nt an easy drug to deal with xxx
