Experience with the Mirena Coil for Endo

Hello,

After not getting on with side effects of Prostap, my gynae is proposing to trial the Mirena Coil. I'm due to have it fitted at the end of this month. I've heard mixed reviews - from horror stories (re side effects) to success stories!

I just wondered if anyone who's had the coil could share their experiences. After my experience with Prostap, I'm reluctant to try more treatment but I'm also desperate for relief from symptoms.

TIA!

Hi Tia!

I’ve had the coil for 2 years now and I think it has just changed my symptoms 😜 it has helped with endo pain, especially around periods, but it is still very much there. One thing it has improved is my bowel issues (used to get a lot of diarrhoea then constipation) so the whole “calming down your pelvis” that some docs harp on about is reasonably true for me. I still get bleeds which are much lighter and now I get way more frequent headaches than I did with the prog pill. Sometimes I have spotting every few days sometimes it can be 6 weeks between bleeds. The first month after having it out in I had pretty bad cramps but this is likely to be my body just getting used to something.

TMI but I’ve never been able to find the strings myself, nor has my partner, but the doc has been able to every time I’ve had a gynae appointment (they’ve told me that they’re just quite short strings).

Hope that helps! B

Hi Bryony,

Thank you for your response. I also have similar bowel symptoms and it drives me up the wall. I'm waiting to have a colonoscopy because of the bowel issues because my GP said I have signs of inflammation so I'm freaking out a bit! But my symptoms are closely linked to my cycle. I'll try to Mirena and see how it goes.

They've pushed the coil on me so much as the only option to the decapeptyl injections and like you I had a nightmare time on the injections so I have no faith in the medical world anyway and see it as wasting my time and money. I refused the coil, was offered the progesterone only pill and had a bad time on that too so now I'm just going to forget about treatment and just suffer on as at least I know what to expect. I wish you luck

Hey, I had the coil also for endo symptoms. My experience is that nothing changed for me - all endo symptoms remain, no relief for any aspect (pain, bowel issues, bloating etc).

Only bonus is that I don’t bleed at all, but that very much depends on the individual as I’ve heard some bleed for months straight with the coil.

Worth a try if you feel comfortable to do so, once mine is out I won’t be rushing to have it put back in.

Heya, I am on my 3rd attempt at the coil. First I tried the copper coil and my body rejected it, same again with Marina but for about 15 months I've had the Marina coil in again and this time it was put in during a laproscapy/hysteroscapy and it has stayed in. It hasn't stopped pain or bleeding but it has lightened the bleeding significantly. That's all I can say really on my experience. If you get it I do hope it helps xx

Hi Aussie. Sorry to hear you are struggling with this. I had the Mirena Coil fitted as U had tried the injections (both types & I was still struggling) It was a nightmare! The lady who fitted it could not understand why it had been offered. The pain afterwards was horrendous and the effect it had on my skin was noted by the nurse when I went back. My face broke out & I started to get patches similar to ezmema. She said "I'm taking it out" Others have praised it however & I hope it is successful for you. My struggle started 30yrs ago & I am saddened that the same treatments I had are still the only things available. I wish you well x

Hi Aussie

I had the mirena coil fitted for my end 3.5yrs ago. I'd only had the endo removed via laparoscopy up to that point and was really struggling with the period pain (understatement), fatigue and nausea. I'm much, much better than I was. I no longer have periods, so that is eliminated. I do spot occasionally and get some pain, but it's half a day max and I can manage it with painkillers. The nausea is gone and the fatigue is not perfect, but better than it was.

Hi lovely,

I had a marina coil fitted during my laraposcopy and all I can say is it really messed up my body! the amount of pain I was in was terrible, shooting pains in my vagina and down my legs all the time, I was also not able to sit on my bottom properly.

I had spoken to my gynecologist and at first he put the pain down to the laraposcopy so I gave it a couple of months but the pain was still very much the same.

Due to the constant pain a couple of months after surgery and waiting my gynecologist then examined me and found that the coil was not placed correctly so was not actually doing what it should do I had also developed a infection during that time waiting and so was put on antibiotics for the infection I had to have coil removed but on removal the coil broke inside of me as scar tissue had wrapped itself around the coil! I had to go into hospital as a day case to have the coil cut out of me and it was just a awful experience!

Although I had a awful experience, I know some people who have had positive results with the coil hopefully it will help relieve your symptoms you can only try. Hope it all goes well for you xx
