MRI for Endometriosis

Hi

I’ve got an MRI tomorrow to check on my endometriosis has anyone had this done ?

How long does it last ?

Did anyone have operations after it was it just for checking on it ?

I’m not looking forward to it but it’s better than an operation.

Hi missionofendo, I’ve recently been referred to an endometriosis centre and the specialist that I saw wanted to do an MRI as well as a laparoscopy think it was so he can check for deep infiltrating endometriosis on the MRI. My scan lasted about 30 minutes and I’m due to go for an operation next week, hope that helps? Thanks Amber ☺️

That’s good to get the op so soon after best of luck with that. I’ll feel better once the MRI is over I’ve had a head one that lasted 40 mins I don’t really like them.Thanks x

I know I feel very lucky that the process has gone so quick. Yeah the MRI is not a nice experience was glad once it was over! Hopefully it all goes OK!x

Hi, how did you get referred so quickly please? My GP has referred me to a NHS hospital but having called one of the secretaries the waiting list for appts is a year long…..which route did you take please? TIA- keep healthy xxx

Hi Amber, if it puts your mind at rest a bit, when you have a pelvic MRI it is only the bottom half of your body in the machine so it's not quite as claustrophobic as when you're having a head scan xx

I had an mri around a year and a half ago after a laparoscopy 6 years ago now. Once results through my consultant talked me through it but refused to do any more surgery. Told me to stay on the pill, and was so disinterested. Rally hope your mri goes ok.

I’ve had one a few years back before my last lap, it took about 20 minutes I think? It’s a bit noisy but just close your eyes and try to relax. My MRI report noted a large endometrioma on each ovary, but when the surgeon got in there, there were none there so it’s not always 100% accurate. It did show a lot of other stuff which was correct though, I guess the tissue must be difficult to differentiate between with there being so many adhesions xx

Hi, I had an MRI done urgently after my incomplete surgery in Nov 2019, so by Jan 2020 my MRI showed even the tiny bit of adhesion clipping the Junior surgeon attempted had all grown back and had me stuck down all over again. He was incompetent and inexperienced. I was urgently referred for surgery (Hysterectomy) and my Consultant put me on Synarel (less damaging that Lupron/prostap) but Covid hit! I’ve been urgent for 18 months now with no sign of let up. I’m paying £700 in May for a private MRI in Belfast. The Private GP cost £89 but that’s because my own wouldn’t listen. I will get a better picture of my system inside. I need two areas MRI’d hence the cost. Pelvis and abdomen as my Endo is so invasive, deep and everywhere with massive bowel involvement.

I’m claustrophobic but they put me in feet first so I don’t panic. I recommend wearing a none wire bra though and keeping all metal, jewellery etc at home. Also, even though tattoos may be older, they can still burn a little.

Over all I was in and out within 2hrs but that’s NHS waiting as well. This time I’m in at 9am and the secretary says I’ll be done by 9:30 with results within 2 days.

I’m stage 4 Endo, been bed bound a lot, and it’s lead to other conditions, also NI doesn’t have one excision specialist at all. So, hysterectomy and hope for the best.

I hope your MRI is informative. It should be quick, and results shouldn’t take long at all. My consultant didn’t send me mine but I did an FOI request at 4 weeks and requested all my information so I knew what all had been done, said and planned.

Sometimes, NHS is slow but steady, others it’s like waiting for a bus and none come. I’m spending my savings for this MRI but only because I’m 34 my sons going to Uni in September and my daughter to college. I want to get back to work after 4 years out, so I’m attempting to speed up the process.

Endo Care is so poor nationally, and even more so locally with many not even aware of it.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I’m also from Belfast and suffer from stage 4 endometriosis and I’m waiting on surgery, I’ve had to go private also but I’m seeing a doctor called David Hunter at Knightsbridge who’s an endometriosis surgery, my GP recommended him to me and he is 170 for an appointment but this doesn't include any scans he may need to do at the appointment

Sometimes they will give you an injection too to relax the bowel.

Takes 45-60 min. Noise is off putting but you don’t go head first into the machine, or at least I didn’t. I’m waiting 9 weeks and no results back as yet though 🙃

Hi, I had one, lasted an hour and only my lower half was in, they should give you headphones to drown the noise out. I had my surgery about 4 weeks after I had the scan and I’m now 4 weeks post lap surgery today. Xx

And depending on what type of MRI, they may inject you with a dye halfway through to check properly for the endo, so a nurse will be in with you to put a cannula in and the dye, but they should tell you they’re going to do that before they do.

I had one a few weeks ago as had ct scan oct but mri is better for picking it up. They picked up my endo on it. You are usually inside it for about 25 minutes its not too bad just have to keep completely still can feel a little claustrophobic but not too bad. I already had surgery planned as they steady pretty much knew case bur wanted the mri for a bit more clarity. I have to have full hysterectomy 6 May 😔 xx good luck with everything xx

Thank you it went well I asked for feet first and this MRI was bright and wide and I feel happy it’s over.

I had surgery for it back in 2011. It wasn't terrible. I think it took about 10 days till I could move, then another week till I felt normal. I have 3 children now and they are adorable! I'm getting an MRI myself on the 19th. I'm not nervous about that. MRI takes a lot less time than it used to. So you won't be there long. I'm praying my endometriosis isn't back. Sigh.

Thanks Beth I had it - it was really fine ! Machine was brighter whiter modern compared to others I have seen.

Did you fall naturally pregnant after the endo lap ?

Yes I did! And we were very surprised and delighted each time! I did have to have a c-section with each child though. It's even more surprising because my hubby is 26 years older than me! We thought our chances of getting pregnant were near zero, but God blessed us three times!
