I had the "brilliant" idea to try a recipe from an endometriosis diet book. The very first recipe called for coconut oil to use for cooking. Ok! Something new to try!
However, I'd never used coconut oil as an ingredient before (no other ingredients in the jar - just plain oil). It turns out that both my husband and I have a food intolerance to coconut oil (It's not an ingredient that features in the cooking from our respective countries).
It felt almost as though I'd eaten a cactus, and the prickles were poking me from the inside. That's not a stellar feeling while recovering from a laparoscopy.
So, I wanted to pass on this hard-won knowledge. There can be surprises when experimenting with new diet approaches and recipes! Silly, silly me. 😉
It’s not silly, sometimes the only way to tell is to try it.I use coconut sugar making chocolate, tried something food wise using oil but can’t remember what 🤣 it’s great for inside the nose for sores 😂
I hope you both recover ok from that and the laparoscopy 🙂
What a rotten thing to happen when trying to recover. The low fodmap diet has helped me a lot, no other diet has done a thing and even made me worse. Even with that, there are lots of things I don't eat or whatever. XX
Thanks for mentioning the low Fodmap diet is helping you. I just bought a book about it last week, and I've only read the intro so far. It's slightly overwhelming because I like most foods - and I know going on a "food adventure" would be tricky in my kitchen because my husband and I tend to eat the same things because we cook together. I think I would need to get buy-in from him, or have can absolutely clear idea of what I wanted to do first. It's the little things - like how to switch away from eating bread.
I buy the polish bakery sourdough bread which I am ok with, it is only literally ONE loaf they do that fits the diet but I really like it. You have to read the ingredients on every packet. However, it isn't that easy to follow, took me a little while. After a few weeks you test your tolerance levels so you will probably then find what really upsets you and what you can cope with. Quantities are really important too. I'd really highly recommend it to any sufferer of endometriosis. Good luck XX
That’s a shame, but not silly! I tried making a smoothie using coconut water - I can eat coconut in other forms, but I got a very similar reaction to yours. Not sure if you’re vegan, but if you’re not, could you use butter instead? Its just a matter of experimenting, and mixing and matching.
I know it’s tough when you have to factor in your hubby (I have to eat low carb because I’m also diabetic. He’s very slender and would disappear if he completely shared my diet 😂). But if it’s for your health, you have to try this. If he doesn’t like it, you can try a bit of both - for example, I’ll make turkey bolognese with pasta for him, and courgetti for me.
Thanks Moonglo,I like the idea of being able to have slightly different foods at shared meals. Thanks!
No, I'm not a vegan. My experimentation with food is to try to reduce acid reflux, a sticky throat, bloating, and a sore digestive system.
I'm starting to wonder if I've become somewhat lactose intolerant. I've made it to my fourties, so the children's lactase production is far behind me. 😉 I've become a fan of oat milk (as of last week).
We’re all so different, and everything is connected!I’m still experimenting with GF because, on top of everything, I’ve got thyroid issues 🤦🏻♀️ It seems to help, I’m about 90% GF and it seems to help with phlegm, bloating and fatigue.
