Bio-identical progesterone on its own

I’m nearly 49 and have just discovered my pain and heavy periods for years is endometriosis and is getting worse. Used to think my terribly bad back was a back problem, and now know otherwise. I can’t have Mirena and mini pill made be bleed every day and caused bad headache. I have gp appt tomorrow to discuss treatment. Has anyone been treated with bio-identical progesterone on its own? If so what is the dose? I can’t find out online as it only seems to be officially used as part of combined hrt. I want to be able to go to my gp with details. And do you take it every day of the month? If so does it stop bleeding ?

Hi,

Yes I’m on Utrogestan 100mg in tablet form and I’ve had a total hysterectomy with all removed!.It’s the only bio-dentical progesterone on the UK market and was prescribed last year by my private Endo consultant at a BSGE centre.I don’t take any oestrogen out of choice it likes my body too much!

Many GP’s are reticent to prescribe Utrogestan to ladies like me in fact it’s specifically prescribed to those who still have their womb however the Endo specialist’s support for those that don’t....

I do hope your GP will support you...

Go ask for it! Please do let me know if I can help further...

Best wishes Clare xx

Thanks for the reply Clare. I still have my womb and ovaries etc, and don’t really want to start drastic measures due to my age. I’m nearly 49. I get bad pain 2 weeks of the month but not so bad the other 2 weeks so I am hoping I can ease it and cure bad periods with Utrogestan. But can only see it being used with combined HRT online. Thank you for reply. Xx

I tried progesterone only pill last year for a short time, did nothing for pain, but balanced hormones, which helped. Diagnosed last year, 51, lap Feb, hysterectomy last week.Hope you manage to get things sorted ASAP 🙂

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the intrusive question and you don’t need to respond if it’s too personal but were you still having regular periods at 51? I was hoping by 51 my estrogen levels will have dropped enough to stop my periods and get rid of the problem thanks x

Don’t worry ask away, it’s been one hell of a learning curve.I was still having periods up until lap, I think I had one after and then started Zoladex. I had a bit of bleeding the first month. They didn’t start again after, but can take months.

The consultant hoped menopause would kick in after the Zoladex, but it didn’t change anything and just got worse.

GPs were useless last year, just assumed menopause and never had a diagnosis for anything from them, apart from uti. Don’t let them palm you off that endo couldn’t be an issue because of age.

Hi I take bio identical progesterone only cream and it helps somewhat. I can’t take conventional hormones as the side effects are even worse than the Endo. I buy it online. Never been offered it by gp did ask about it once but was dismissed as so many things are. Hope it helps

We’re in the same boat you and I. I’m 50 in February and have suffered with endo since my teens. Many ops. Much pain. Read my profile. Please will you let me know how you get on and what they say. I won’t take hormonal treatment any longer because in my opinion there’s simply not enough research or years of medical history to make an informed decision. I toyed with HRT and formed the same opinion. The associated risks I read and hear of are too frightening to me, so I’m trying au natural for a few years. We can DM if you like. Nina.

Thanks guys. Been to the gp today, to discuss treatment. Initially found 18 months ago as I have raised ca125 levels, quite scary. Scans etc showed nothing thankfully (ultrasound and ct). So presumed to be endometriosis considering very heavy periods and lower back muscle spasm every month, and pain in the hip. Told my go I want to try Utrogestin, but she is unsure of dose to treat endometriosis, as it is usually only prescribed for use with combined HRT. She has emailed a consultant to ask if possible and for correct dosage and will get back to me as soon as she hears. Thanks 😊 🙏
