First few periods after laparoscopy?

Hi Ladies, I’ve just come across this forum and hope someone can answer my question!

Abit about me incase anyone else is in the same boat, i’m 20 and had my surgery 2 months and 10 days ago, my symptoms before surgery were terrible, excruciating pain and extremely heavy bleeding (would always take time of school/sixthform/uni etc). During my surgery, my doctor inserted the mirena coil. From the date of surgery, i bled for a month and around a month ago i had the mirena coil removed because i had excruciating pain and my body was rejecting it. After removal I bled excessively for around 5-7 days (this was 10 times worse than what my bleeding and pain was like prior to having surgery).

It is now a month later and I have gotten my period. I’m on day 3. The first 2 days were light and i had slight cramping, however, now on day 3 I am bleeding crazily again and in a lot of pain. I expected my periods to get better not stay the same/get worse. I’m feeling terrible and just wanted to know if this is normal. There’s nothing much on google about it and my doctors are generally useless when it comes to discussing endo (hence why i had to get it excised privately for 6k but that’s a story for another day). The bleeding is very heavy and flowing out like a frikin waterfall.

Please can you lovely ladies let me know if you have had a similar experience and if it gets better? I genuinely feel like constantly crying because i cannot take this anymore, it’s seriously affecting my mental health at this point.

All help is much appreciated x

It is early days and periods can be painful after surgery for the first two to three months. Your hormone will have been disrupted too and the mirena is associated with irregular bleeding. Many specialists prescribe the combined pill for the first 3 months after to allow healing before a period.

However, your pain will depend also on the severity of endo and whether it was treated appropriately. Does your discharge note say what was found and done?

Firstly, thankyou so much for your response I really do appreciate it!

I spoke to my doctor who said that it could take a while for me periods to get better because this could be as a result of having the mirena removed.

I actually have no idea exactly what stage my endometriosis was at. I remember being out of it when the doctor came and spoke to me and said ‘there was a lot’ and also that my right ovary was pushed down because of it, so he had to put that back in place too. I have my post op follow up in a couple of days where i’m going to ask exactly how much endo was found and what stage of endometriosis it was, the discharge note just says that it was found and excised.

Does the discharge note literally say endometriosis excised without any indication where - sometimes there can be words that might mean something without being obvious? Was this done in secondary care (normal gynaecology dept) and do you know if the surgeon has any sort of specialism in endo?

Hi, you have to talk with your surgeon. I had laparoscopy 4 weeks ago and my period now are heavy with blood clots. I'm getting worry. Did you have the pathology test what was found?

Same thing happened to me, had surgery in 2019. Period came to weeks later was admitted to hospital due to how heavy the flow was. This continued for months. Wrote a complaint against hospital and they came back saying the surgery went fine and it was not the reason periods became heavier.

2021 Still suffering, on transamic acid and also utovlan, waiting another scan as had heavy bleeding continuously from the beginning of the year. Gynaecologist tried to put in Mirena was unable to do so. So extremely worried as am anaemic, physically and mentally exhausted and still no answer. Currently trying to eat better and also taking black seed oil as I was told it can ease symptoms. Recently have noticed bruising on my stomach, I think it’s due to taking so much medication. I’m literally over it and just want a day where I don’t complain about my health.
