Hlw Ladies,I have severe endometriosis with bowel and bladder adhesion.I got my surgery date next week.This is my 1st laparoscopy.I am scared about this specifically about pain.
Can anyone share experience after laparoscopy? How long the post operative pain lasts? Do they give any powerful pain medication after surgery? What diet should I follow after surgery?What is the chance of complications after surgery?What precaution should I take for early recovery? Please share your experience. It will be a great help for me.

I had a laparoscopy for bilateral endometriomas so your recovery may not be the same as mine. I remember dreading the pain as well, but when it came down to it, i don't remember feeling abdominal pain, i just remember feeling discomfort when trying to sit up etc. I did get a shooting type pain by my belly button that lasted a few seconds, i still get that pain every so often so that's a permanent problem (but it doesn't bother me since it doesn't happen often). I was very ill in the days after the laparoscopy because i needed a blood transfusion. I don't know how common that is (there wasn't any sign of blood loss so i don't know why it happened) but if i had to have surgery again I'd try to take iron beforehand. In my notes, i have about 5 pain relief medications listed as given within surgery, some was given just before the surgery finished. After the surgery they carried on giving paracetamol, diclofenac and i had morphine - which was self controlled by pressing a button, i didn't use much of it though. I didn't have any abdominal pain with the pain relief, the only reason i continued taking the pain relief was because i was scared in case the pain came once i stopped taking it. The discomfort you get from using the abdominal muscles lasts more than a week. After the second day i just took paracetamol. You might get referred pain or discomfort in your right shoulder, this is caused by irratation of the diaphragm nerves. I had nausea on the second and third day and vomited once from a headache pain, so i didn't eat until i had a blood transfusion two and half days after surgery, however they do give anti sickness medications if nausea is a side effect of certain medications. I think morphine can cause nausea in some people. Before i had the surgery i had to do a bowel preparation, so the bowel was cleared out. When i started eating again, i started off with something light like soup and a bread roll and then the next day cereal. I didn't get any bowel issues like constipation.
I had laparoscopy with endometrioma removed and fallopian tubes removed. I was given a drink of morphine (I guess) when I woke up, and the first night home I took the prescribed codeine. Thereafter just paracetamol/ibuprofen.

I think I was in recovery for half an hour then I woke up. As soon as I woke up they wheeled me to my day room. It was there they gave me the morphine drink. No nausea or anything - they insisted I drank some juice and ate a sandwich within an hour of waking up (tasted like cardboard). I went home about 4 hours after waking up, but it was only delayed that long as I couldn't do a wee (which they need to see before they will discharge you). The anaesthetic had just made my bladder sleepy! I had the op on the Friday afternoon. I was on paracetamol/ibuprofen a few times a day for the next week or so. On the Sunday I went into town for a family meal, and on the Tuesday drove as usual to my art class. So the pain really wasnt an issue for me and certainly not something that would put me off having the same operation again.
Oh, and I did get constipation! Anaesthetic gives you constipation, anyway and the codeine they sent me home with (I only took that the first night) also does. So it was about 5 days until I had a proper bowel movement, and that was only after taking the lactose drink they also sent me home with. The worse part of the whole experience for me was the anti-blood clots injections they sent me home with that I had to self administer. I dreaded doing them.
Not sure why. The recovery nurse was surprised they had been prescribed and said they don't usually give them unless you have risk factors (smoke/overweight etc). But it might be because I know I was under anaesthetic for longer than they had anticipated as there were so many adhesions to cut through.
I had a lap at the end of February for stage 4 recto vaginal endometriosis. I had a very large serious adhesion that basically fused my rectum to my vagina. Because of this they had to pin my ovaries to my abdomen for a week which was super uncomfortable. Because my adhesions were all along my bowels I had to stay over night. I had a hard time coming out of the anesthesia because it was a long surgery (3 hours). I found the nurses were super on top of my pain control and nausea as it’s something I went over with the anesthesiologist prior to my surgery. I have 15 chronic conditions including fibromyalgia so they brought out the big guns which I was pleased with. One thing that happened is that I didn’t pass gas in the hospital and ended up with an ilius (bowel blockage) later the next day and ended up in emergency because of the pain. So make sure you fart before you leave lol.
They sent me home with tramadol which was good enough with my other regular pain meds. Keep in mind I have fibro so pain is more intense. I also had a mirena fitted during. I only bled for a couple days and very minimally after I left the hospital. I think it took me 4 weeks before I even started to feel normal again. I found that the pain was manageable and honestly I slept the better part of a week.
Make sure to eat lots of healthy foods and drink lots of fluids to help with recovery. Take the pain meds even if you feel okay especially for the first few days. Don’t do a lot of stairs if you can help it and don’t lift anything for a week. Otherwise you’ll be okay 💕
