Mirena coil causing agony

Hi girls,

I got the mirena coil fitted for the first time 2 hours ago and whilst inserted was in a lot of pain and ever since I’ve been in absolute agony with stomach cramps and I have a really sharp shooting pain that feels like it’s in my vagina.

Has anyone else been in severe pain after been fitted before? As I’m starting to get anxious as hot water bottles and pain killers aren’t easing it in the slightest.

Thank you

Hello yes I had this. I was taking my max codeine etc and it wasn't helping. It took a few weeks for mine to settle down to a point my painkillers actually helped and another couple of weeks before the constant pain stopped.

To be honest the only reason I didn't get it out during this time is because I had to go through GA just to get it put in. So I really wanted to give it a go, to not make it feel like all the faff to get it done under GA being for nothing.

Hi there i had a mirena fitted two days ago. It was painful fitting but fortunately over quite quickly. The pain wasn't too bad the first day but last night and today I am having bad cramping - akin to bad period cramps so I know how you feel! Taking paracetamol and ibuprofen plus hot water bottle but not really helping much. It's making me feel nauseous as well. Still having bleeding although not a lot now. Hoping it will get easier soon..

It's hard to know whether to assume it's normal..

My gynaecologist advised a mirena to try and help with my endometriosis but at the moment whilst in such pain it's difficult to envisage any benefits!

I had quite crippling pain from mine that I’ve truly never felt but I’ve genuinely noticed symptoms calming down as time has gone on. At first it was constant bleeding and intense cramping, then the bleeding stopped and now it’s intervals of cramping rather than a constant one. I used cocodamol with paracetamol at the 3 hour mark to ensure I was topped up, as well as hot water bottles. (Careful though, the constipation needs to be controlled bc it sent me over the edge). You know your body best, but definitely try to see how you do for 1 cycle so that you know it’s definitely right for you. I’m now on my second period with the coil and whilst the lead up was intense, the bleed itself is truly much lighter and less painful than my “natural” periods were. Sending you good vibes and relief xx

I would go back and get it checked it’s in the right position. A friend had hers fitted and it had settled in the wrong position and caused her so much pain it was digging into her side. I’m not saying that’s what’s happening to you but if your still in a lot of pain in a day or so I would go get it checked for it’s positioning xx

I had mine removed after a few days it gave me bad vibes, I knew something wasn't right with it, so I insisted on having it took out in hospital(by a trainee) so I took a deep breathe and it came out with a massive gush of blood and I bled for days after removal instantly, so yes I'm sure that wasnt a good sign.

It's your body, you can have it removed and try another method that your comfortable with, discuss with your gp's contraceptives nurse , there's so many options these days for contraception.

Xx

Thank you, unfortunately the mirena coil is the last option of contraceptive for me as I’ve tried around 10 diff pills, implant and injections and they all have caused bad periods, constant bleeding or serious side affects so this was my last option. My mum & her mum both had the same problem and the coil worked for them both excellently so I’m praying the pain eases and it works. I was on my period while it was fitted so I’m not sure if that’s hindered the pain or not but I’m going to give it some more time as If this doesn’t work I don’t know what I will do! Xx

If it’s the implant or injection causing you constant bleeding then you can take the pill aswell if that helps you? I got constant bleeding with the implant so swapped to the injection where I got constant bleeding again so I started taking the pill to subside the bleeding and I just don’t take a break from it so I don’t get a period which relieves pain a lot!

Not sure if it’s an option for you but maybe worth a shot?

I was in absolute agony with mine, no amount of painkillers helped and I was still bleeding every day with it. I had it checked a few times and it was in the right spot, so I had it removed after 2 months.
