Severe endo - what does this mean?

I saw a consultant privately this week who also works at a BSGE Centre. After taking my history and doing an excruciating exam exam ( he was feeling around the back of my uterus) he said that he suspects severe endometriosis and/or adenomyosis. I have my Lap in a few weeks with possible excision. I was so relieved at someone finally taking notice and in so much discomfort from the exam that I just sat like a nodding dog afterwards and came away wondering what he means by severe endometriosis? Can anyone help?

This is the treatment specification for treatment of severe endo in BSGE centres which includes the definition:

Thank you, that’s really helpful. So, I’m guessing when he was feeling around the back of my uterus he was perhaps seeing if there is pain in recto-vaginal area. I’m just so relieved to be getting the surgery having been turned away by one gynae and fobbed off endlessly by one particular GP!

Yes, rectovaginal endo often extends outside the peritoneal space that a lap looks in and deep nodules can be felt behind the cervix and on the uterosacral ligaments from feeling around with fingers up the vagina. So I think he will have felt nodules which you would expect to be exquisitely painful. They often say women virtually lift off the examining table with pain. You are now in the right place so I hope your treatment path goes well.

Yes it was excruciating and still suffering two days on but at least I now know I’m on the right tracks! Many thanks for help.
