Build up of pain and then a “bloody” explosion!

Like many of you I’ve got constant pain, always right sided from flank to inside thigh, appendix area and lower back. In the last two months the pain has sometimes got that bad that I feel like my insides are about to explode - I thought I was about to lose everything in the M&S food hall queue last week! Instinct is to get to the toilet quickly and it’s almost like an explosion of blood which reduces to a drip and then hardly anything! I’ve got a coil and it doesn’t seem like a period and I had a CT last month which came back normal. Any ideas what this could be?

Oh no that does sound awful :(

Perhaps see if you can book another CT? Your coil may have moved - I'm not sure.

Sometimes they can take it out and then see how you cope; that could be the only way to make sure it's the coil.

If you have a hormone coil then you shouldn't have any bleeding or "periods" as the hormones stop your normal cycles, but it could be that the hormones in it don't suit you. Bleeding is a side effect, and the notes for the coil do say it can take up to 9 months to get used to it.

Doesn't sound right though so go back to your GP or specialist x

I also suffer with right hand sided pain and I got an MRI which diagnosed adenomyosis. They thought it was my appendix but it wasn’t. I have heavy bleeding, horrendous pains. What tests have you had done? Xx

I’ve had a CT, colonoscopy, cystoscopy and hysteroscopy which were all fine. Oh and an ultrasound which was clear but radiologist noted pain over kidney, ovary and uterus. X

Can you ask for an MRI? I had an ultrasound scan which didn’t pick up anything. Xx

Heya Hlous, sorry to hear you're having a hard time there, you're not on your own with the type of pain you describe. How long has your coil been in place? Has it been properly checked by someone who knows where is should be? My latest mirena coil was incorrectly placed/migrated to my cervix and became completely ineffective. I had it put in 4 years ago. I started certrazette (progesterone only pill) a year later.) i stopped taking the pill 6 months ago, and started getting crazy right flank pain and discomfort that stopped me from being able to sleep or get comfortable in bed at night. I always had a little pain there - I've had Stage 4 endo for many years, but I've just been diagnosed with adenomyosis - I've textbook symptoms for it, and the pain in the side matches for diagnosis. I'd recommend getting that coil checked out properly, or ask for a removal and a new one put in. I now insist on anesthetic for anyone dealing with my coil, none of this pop a couple of disprin and bite down on a spoon business ever again! Hope you get sorted out soon. D

Thank you for your reply. The coil has been in for 8mths. I asked a GP to check it as I was having stabbing pains “up there” but she said strings look fine?! I can’t sleep on my right side and have constant right flank pain too. It varies from feeling like my hip and ribs are joining to together to feeling like there’s a tennis ball in there, hence can’t lie on that side. Jeans have always been my staple but I can’t bear anything tight on my flank. X

Ah flip that's rough! If it was me, I'd get back to the gp and get it taken out and a new one put in. Under anesthestic! Just because the strings are ok doesn't mean the coil is in the right place, at the top of the uterus. 8 months is a long wait for it to settle. And those pains do sound a bit like adenomyosis... Worth getting a consult for it maybe.

Hi there,

Flank pain could possibly be from the kidney: kidney stones and infection, for example. However, you need to seek medical advice.

Take care.

You have an explosion of blood? Can you pinpoint where from (the anus or the vagina)?

Whatever it is, it sounds extremely serious.

You need to have an MRI done by a radiologist specialising in endometriosis and book an appointment with an endometriosis excision surgeon ASAP.

Definitely vagina. It’s really strange as I can feel the pressure building up again today so I know what’s coming! If I hadn’t recently had a CT I be convinced that it was a cyst filling and bursting but CT didn’t show anything!

This is not normal and do not let anyone tell you it is. Book an appointment with an endometriosis specialist. How often does this happen? I'm guessing you are not pregnant
