Irregular endometrioma

Hello All,

I had my laparoscopy last Thursday, up and about now and healing well. I had gone in for a salpingo-oophorectomy as I had what looked like a complex mass on my right ovary. As it turns out it wasn’t on my ovary at all, it was on my uterus, so have kept both ovaries. The surgeon has said that it was a large irregular endometrioma 16cm, and has sent it off for urgent testing. Also found endometriosis which they treated.

I think “irregular” and "urgent testing” are obviously worrying me a bit - is there anyone out there that has had something similar - keen to hear all stories good or bad - just want to be a little more prepared as sitting here wondering isn’t really helping? When asked if he was worried my surgeon just said that they successfully managed to get it out in a bag intact as it was quite contained, but it had strong vascularity, looked to contain old blood. I guess I will know more when the results come back but how long is the usual wait for this sort of thing?

Thanks in advance...

Sounds like a positive lap not on your ovaries that’s good

Try not to worry too much. I had a mass removed which was also sent for testing but came back as endo. It seems to come in all unusual shapes and forms! Anything that is removed from your body during surgery will always be sent for testing, it's totally normal. Just think positive that it's been removed and they are now on top of it. Good luck and keep resting xx

Thank you! Can you remember how long it took to find out? Did they phone you or just tell you the results at your follow up appointment?

Because everything was clear it was just sent in the post to me a few weeks later. I think because mine was obvious to them to be endometriosis they weren't in any rush to push it through so it was a few weeks. Try to think positive and rest up I'm sure it'll be fine xx

If it wasn't on the ovary, it wasn't an endometrioma. An endometrioma is a endometriotic blood cyst on the ovary. I would ask the gyn for more clarification as to where it was exactly (maybe it was on the ovary but was so big it touched the uterus as well, which is very likely). It's amazing that it was 16-cm and the ovary was preserved. Sound like the laparoscopy was very successful.

Now focus on healing and don't worry. Sleep a lot (9-10 hours per night). Eat very healthily (mostly fish, veggies, bone broth, smoothies with collagen to allow healing of the wounds). Drink lots of water and take it easy!

Thank you Stefania - that was my understanding too, but just have my discharge letter and slightly groggy recollection of the converstation - will wait and see what happens, thank you for the advice!

What does it say on the discharge letter?

It just says "laparoscopic removal of large irregular endometrioma mass from Right Adnexa". Follow up on discharge says 12 weeks but have got letter today saying 20 December so not too long

The adnexa are the ovaries, tubes, ligaments and anything else attached or close to the uterus (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uterine_appendages), so it's not clear what that endometrioma was attached to. I am guessing attached to the right ovary and either the right broad ligament or tube or anything near that.

Irregular might mean in terms of shape. Let's wait for the biopsy but of they said endometrioma it's 99% likely to come back saying it's endometriotic tissue.

I'm here if you need anything!

Thank you Stefania :) - feel a bit more laissez faire about everything today - I guess the main thing is its not there anymore! Only went to the toilet once last night (I was going 5 - 7 times a night) and sleeping so well for the first time in ages - it makes such a difference!
