Hi everyone :)

I have my long overdue lap on Wednesday, but yesterday I work up with a reaaally sore throat. Tonsils are very swollen and sore but no temperature or cold!

Will I still be able to have my lap? I really don’t want to delay things any further as you know long the wait is already 😔

Thank you xx

Hello,

In all likelihood if you’re unwell and have a temperature they will delay it :/ I know how frustrating this is as I was supposed to have a long awaited laparoscopy in December and got a nasty virus so was told on the day I wasn’t fit for surgery and was booked in for Jan but as the virus hadn’t cleared I was ruled unfit again. (Ended up having it in March).

My doctor who ruled me unfit in December just said that as it wasn’t urgent surgery (IE isn’t trauma surgery) it would be irresponsible to go ahead when my body is already fighting off illness as I would be more susceptible to infection, there would be more risks with the anaesthetic (as the infection in my throat could go down into my lungs) and recovery generally would be more difficult. Although I was really disappointed in hindsight it was the best decision for me at the time.

Having said that however you may find you start to feel better or after talking to your consultant they decide the op can go ahead but it will be down to then to decide on the day. Best thing to do would be to try and rest and recover and not to stress as that will make it worse.

Hot water with fresh slices of root ginger should help :)

Oh! And if they do cancel it the NHS target is to get you booked in within 2 weeks time - I’ve had a couple of operations cancelled and have always found this to be the case xxxx

Thank you!! It’s weird, all I have is a sore throat! No temp, blocked nose etc...I’m just praying I feel better on Wednesday! When yours was cancelled the first time, did you still turn up on the day of your op, or did you call and speak with your gynaecologist first? X

I did call the hospital but they told me to turn up on the day and speak to my consultant and the anaesthetist as they would be the ones making the decision on the morning of the surgery. If you haven’t got a temperature or yellow mucus I think it’s likely it will go ahead! Xx
