Spicy food and endo flares up

Hello ladies!

Does anyone get a flare up after eating spicy food? e.g. bad and painful bowel movement with a burning sensation after emptying the bowel (sorry for TMI)

Is it because there's endometriosis on the bowels or it's an IBS?

Really don't know since I am waiting for my laparoscopy although my gynae saw a lump behind the uterus.

Thanks in advance xxx

Spicy food is know to cause problems with endo, it's on the list of foods to avoid - endo diet. But you can reduce things rather than eliminate altogether if that helps.

I've not had any issues, but then my stomach doesn't like really spicy foods generally - I get gassy, bloated and burpy.

The burning sensation is probably the spices your stomach couldn't break down passing out! The painful bowel movement plus burning (if not spicy related) could be endo flareup related though.

Best thing to do is keep a log of when you've eaten spicy food and how it's made you feel and when during your cycle you are or if you have an endo flareup log that. It's the best way I've found to reduce certain foods during my endo flareups but so I can still enjoy stuff during my "normal" days.

Hope that makes sense xx

Hi!

Thanks for your reply and advice Farah :)

Actually I get the burning feeling almost every day (whether I ate spice or not :( ) so I guess it is a flare up.

But I will keep tracking my symptoms and ask my gynae about it.

Best wishes xx

Hi Sam-05,

Have you discussed your diet with your specialist? I had the same issues, perhaps ask for a referral to a gastroenterologist, who can then refer you to a nutritionist, who can coach you through the the 6 week fodmap elimination protocol, it makes a massive difference to the burning sensation. I normally get the burning sensation from too much honey 😉

Sending hugs
