Wait times for laproscopy?

Hi!

How long have people waited for laproscopic surgery? If it was a while was there anything you could do to speed up the process?

I currently have been waiting 6 months, on the cancellation list and I had to go to my gp because I’m nearly about to lose my job due to the pain. Really struggling and they have sent a letter to my surgeon but nothing back.

I waited about 6-7 months for mine but I’m in wales. Have you tried contacting the surgeons secretary, might be a good idea to call and ask what’s going on x

hi Keke123,

feel sorry for you, hope keep your job. I do know going private might speed things up. But looks like you're going through the public system. Definately communicate to your GP of your job situation and see if he/she can convey anything to speed things up with your lap. You'll be surprised how interested GP's in general, when it comes to keeping your job with endometriosis. Well i found that in my experience. Also, would you feel comfortable telling your work regarding your pain and that you do have an operation coming up? Could get an endometriosis UK to come talk to your work for a work place wellness session, to try educate them, if its easier for you that way. (sorry defo not sure if endo uk offer this but Endo NZ did). And definately try get things speeding up with your surgeon, give them a call. Communication is key, and you don't want to loose your job in a few months and look back and wish you communicated to your boss and to your GP and to your Gyne. Try calling & email, as letters can be quite slow, and you never know if and when they even turn up, where as its easier for them to respond by email or phone, as you're right there. Hope you keep your job most of all....xxx

Thanks for the reply. I personally emailed them about 3 weeks ago and got nothing back and called a couple of weeks ago too and they said they couldn’t tell me anything.

The letter is from my gp, that’s all they said they could do :( pretty much broke down in there.

Did you go private? I initially did for my diagnosis but I’m not sure how much surgery would be going private. Because it’s a pre existing medical condition I don’t think I would be covered on bupa and such.

Thanks :)

Hello, yes i did go private. & I always ask my insurance for prior approval for operations etc. As i don't want to be left with big bills that they don't want to pay :-)

awesome! Thats only 1 month away!! :-) Now you have 1 month to prepare yourself to be as healthy as you can possibly (and comfortably) be before the operation. I do know being fit and healthy (exercising and good diet) prior to the operation will definitely help with a speedy recovery. For me I was 80kg before my 1st operation, and i found it really hard to recover from the operation and get into exercise was almost impossible (for me) - I was overweight for my height and i hardly exercised. And I noticed a real difference having lost 10KG, down to 70kg, for my 2nd operation and on a much better diet, i recovered from that surgery much better and faster. You'd be 100x more healthier than me, but its a really good tip that applies to everyone really as a general rule of thumb for surgery, and something that really worked for me. All the best, and pls lmk if you need any more help :-)

You have my sympathy I’ve been waiting 6months for my surgery. I phoned the secretary who called the people who control the waiting list and they said probably April. Which will be 9 months in total when the consultant said 4 months max! Sadly the NHS are really struggling and even urgent cases are still waiting a long time.

Hope you get a date soon xx

Yeah, I can completely understand they are struggling. At least they told you how long! When I phoned they just said they couldn’t tell me :(

Fingers crossed it goes fast to April for you!!

I really do feel for you Keke123 , It feels like an eternity waiting for your lap. I've just had my second and i was waiting about 4-5 months, with a tease in between of a cancellation but that never happened. I think Laura_T is right, get on the phone, and keep pestering. I've found that with endometriosis you have to push and push before you get anywhere. I hope you get a date soon, take care x

Yeah, I think you all are right and I’ll give them a phone call this week.

This will be my third lap and I’ve never waited this long! I was even super flexible with drs and which hospital in my area which I thought would help!

I really hope you get a date soon! I chased by calling my gynaecologists secretary and got the number for the wait list team. The lovely lady there said she’d book me for the pre op and then about 2 weeks after that I got a last minute cancellation for the next day! I would chase as much as possible! The waitlist team I spoke to said it was about 6-9 months wait typically.

Hope you get a date soon x

Oh that’s brilliant! I’ve had my pre op too and am on the cancellation list. Sadly looks like everyone is obviously waiting for so long they don’t seem to want to cancel.

Will totally call them and try again though,

Thank you!

Hi Iv had to wait around twice for ops first was for a second lap following a diagnosis of stage one endo after 2 years symptoms doubled and I was in daily pain, ringing the surgical waiting list team every couple of days to be told it was longer and longer, a nice lady told me to ask my doctor to write to my consultant stating how much pain I was in and they did. I had an appointment within a week. That lap reviled it had gone to stage 4 and I had obvious adenomyosis. After post op it was decided I should have a partial hysterectomy. Again waiting so long pain getting worse I’m on morphine daily, my doctor wrote to my consultant and I have a date for next month. So it’s worth trying that route x

Oh that’s brilliant that your gps letter worked!

I went to my gp on Monday, so waiting for the reply. Completely broke down in there so she was aware of how much pain I was in. Hopefully it’s bumped me up the ugrgancy list 🙈

Good luck with your op!
